Santa can be real.

When you wake up on Christmas morning he can have decorated the whole house in paper snowflakes. He's filled the stockings with chocs, popcorn (big volume small cost), charity shop toys and things they need like pants.
Santa brings them one gift each and you explain that you couldn't afford to get them presents this year because you were saving up for this amazing dinner/film for you to watch/whatever.
Do you have family or friends who normally get them gifts too? The gifts from you will be lost among a few others, and if you need to get them things to open (I know some people do really feel this) then wrap up small things they need: bits of stationery etc.
It really doesn't need to cost hundreds of pounds.

Everything Wirral said.

Your son will get more joy out of a PS8.99 sledge this year than he will out of any of the latest gadgets. The thing with gadgets is that they become obsolete so soon, then it's on the next thing.

Time and love are more important than the size of the pile...

I feel for you but I'm sure your DS will love whatever you get (my son has loved some secondhand playmobil) - the link below may help cheer you up!

mine were not disappointed age 7. the list of gadgets the others posted on the internet was staggering.

make it magical save your glass jars for landing lights for the sleigh. put in some cheap candles.

pop corn is about a pound a bag for kernals. pop your own. you can make a bag last ages as you only cover the bottom of the pan.

point the kids to children who have less than you. it helps to place them in the whole scheme of things rather than looking at their mates who got more.

stocking gifts: tooth brush and paste. satsuma. chocolate coins at 50p each in aldi, crayons, felt tips (cheap ones, lids get left off and nibs pushed in anyway) warm welly socks, hats, gloves. cheap note book. pen. small £1-2 toy, balloon? pencil sharpener, (they always go missing) if they are older, deodorant, pens, stapler, pack of cards,

depending on budget a £3 dvd? each or share.
