...although, unlike me, you are probably all clever enough to know this already...

I have just been speaking to the TV Licensing people about setting up a DD for my payments, as licence runs out in November, and you can no longer pay for it in the Post Office.

I was asked for the licence number on last year's documents, which I gave, and was told that I had effectively been paying my ex's tv licence for the past 12 months .

The licence was originally applied for by him, and I just took the renewal notice to the PO last year and paid it. Apparently, though, once he left our address, we no longer had a valid license, so since April '05, I have potentially been liable to a fine as I have in effect had no TV license.

Thought this might be useful for anyone else in my boat, am v v v !!!

surely they will just accept you HAVE been paying for that address & now just let you have a licence?

you're not having to back pay are you?

Am not sure, I hung up . Possibly this did not help my cause??!!

Have calmed down a bit now... the girl on the phone wasn't very helpful, and as I seem to mostly be very at the moment, the conversation didn't go well!

Apparently, though, you only count as a household if the person that bought the original licence lives there. I thought it was based on your address, not whether my ex was resident...

Am just cross with myself too, as have been really trying to stay on top of bills etc, & then find that have potential to be fined, even though I paid it!!! (Getting again so will shut up now!)

my sister and i have the same initial, and ssurname. i just chngaeada thea dd daeatails and conitnued paying it in her name for about four years! omg.

I think it was just me, tbh.

I had to wait for 45 minutes to get through to speak to someone, then she was really patronising and kind of like "oh really, your EX husband, so he dosen't live with you, so therefore YOU do not have a LICENCE, but you have been paying for HIS ha ha!!!" - she wound me up!

I am sure that rational thought will reign again after a good night's sleep (?!)

fluffybubble, ime it is person rather than house that the licence is with BUT in the circumstances there should be some discretion. If there are repercussions following the call I would go to CAB and ask for an advisor to 'negotiate' on your behalf (esp as you are feeling (justifiably) angry).

Thanks winnie

Have calmed down (slightly) now. Actually think that my ex would prob write and say that I did pay in respect of the house, as he has not had to pay as is in work accommodation, so he has nothing to lose.

Am crossing my fingers and hoping that nothing more will come of it...
