Holiday on our own

Please tell me I'm not mad! It's always been just my boy and me and we are off on holiday abroad next week. We've been away in this country before but now we're off abroad everyone keeps telling me how mad I am to be going on our own and what if this that or the other happens? He's 4 and we're both very excited but doubts are now creeping in. I've travelled alone loads before so not sure why I'm listening to them?

I did my first holiday in this country alone ...I have previously gone with relatives...Can tell you how more relaxed it is without anyone there. We are off on our first holiday abroad next year so do let me know how it goes.

Will be fine! Where are you going? I loved going abroad with my 4 year old.

It's a good ( if not that relaxing age) age to go. You soon find a beach, pool or small playground to amuse them and you can enjoy being somewhere that's different and usually has better weather. It might be easier having someone else to go with but I found because I had always made all the decisions etc it wasn't any harder than home.

Also people are lovely here and abroad. I always managed to find help when abroad from being lost, to figuring out local transport or even losing stuff. I think the more relaxed attitude in Europe to stuff in general helps tremendously. We have free rides from bus drivers and on one occasion a taxi driver.People are really kind so don't worry too much about stuff going wrong.

When they get a bit older say 9 or 10 they are great company and really appreciate being away on holiday. The only thing is mine can't remember any of his holidays from early on so don't think that you need to do loads of stuff to make an impression. Just have a lovely time!

Please ignore the negative comments - my DS and I have been going away on our own since he was 3 and we love it.

He's 9 now and we have had some great holidays and met some lovely people. I find that people are always willing to help when you are on your own with a child. Directions, recommendations, advice on things to do and places to eat.

Nothing different will/can happen abroad that won't/can't happen in the UK. Make sure you have travel insurance, calpol, plasters and sun cream.

We have literally travelled all over the place - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Lapland, Miami etc etc and other than a few scraped knees and sand in his eyes, never had anything untoward happen.

Have a great time.

You'll probably find that the people that say "what if ... happens" would be just as horrified useless if it happened in your back garden at home! You'll be just the same there are you are here! Have a great time!

Travelling alone with your child is fun, liberating and exciting! My son is almost ten and we've been on many wonderful adventures together, right from when he was a baby. Just remember to take a good book for the evenings - if you're not to tired from all the gallivanting in the day...

Before I met DP myself and DS went with Mango holidays on several occasions and always had a fab time. Hope you enjoy yourselvesGrin
