films or books that empower

Ok so I don't post often, I'm more of a "lurker" bur I've been lurking ALOT recently and just watched a film that made me feel all empowered and Grrr! As a single mummy (and I'm sure other mummies feel this too), I often have times when I feel weak and like I can't cope with everything, sometimes I look for a film or book that will make me feel all strong and "I can do this, yeah!!" and I just thought it might help some of us to share our empowering films/books/tv series)/quotes. I just watched "The Heat", it's hardly "culcha" but after a glass of wine it's made me laugh and made me feel that we can do this, bring it on! :-)

Anyone else want to chime in?

It's been such a long time since I experienced what you describe!
Watching with interest, I could do with that atm. :)

KiaOra it's bloody hard isn't it? I'm actually currently attempting to write the book I needed to read after the finding out the ex and my bff had been sordidly cheating on me in my own house for two years. So many of them a man comes along and "saves the day" Fuck Off!!! (scuse my language) We don't need them! Keep the faith chickadee! We are warriors not worriers!! Xxx

I really like Live Alone & Like It - it's from the 30s but it makes me feel like a strong sister, rather than a weak one.

Cocktail anyone...?

I love love love Accidentally on Purpose by Mary Pols ...ive read it several times. Due a re-read, actually.
I'm unfamiliar with The Heat but will be ordering it. I agree that uplifting stuff makes all the difference.
Uplifting telly is George Clarke's Amazing Spaces - not on at the moment and a bit random but I love the eccentricity, optimism and blind determination of the people who buy a clapped-out milk float from the 1960s and do it up with their savings.

I love it Olive - she gives very practical advice on how to have friends, how not to become a hindrance (gooseberry) and tells you straight what a complete pain in the arse you are to your friends and that they'd much rather you found a husband! - she makes me smile, but her practicality about not hoarding old stuff and being proactive to make new friends - as well as having at least a dozen hobbies - is super.
