Ideas for fun things for dd 6 years and fed up mum?

I feel like I don't always enjoy my time and spend alot of time doing things I think I should be doing. Christmas is coming and I feel miserable and fed up.

I also feel like I havnt settled into family life as just two, although I don't think I've ever been settled in family life even as a child (unstable upbringing with parents).

Anyway I want ideas for fun things to do with my dd who is 6.

I'm thinking over Xmas we could do some nice puzzles together, maybe some arty stuff but I'm not always up for that as it makes more mess for me to clean!

I have just thought maybe I should buy dd a second hand Nintendo wii as then we could play some active games? Any other ideas?

Hama beads
Baking is always good around Christmas. Especially if you do icing.
Parks are fun if you wrap up well enough. My 5yo DD likes to go for walks (think 3-5 miles)

I don't know about Wii's I'm afraid, but when I asked my brother, he said an X Box is better because it has a camera, so you don't have to keep buying accessories with every new game that you get.

Anything that promotes conversation, especially if there is just the two of you.

Any free local attractions such a museums, parks etc you could go to? We like the local library, we go at weekends when the craft club is on, and we like picking out books, reading them, looking forward to reading the others at home.

What about making dens, or dressing up? Use the dressing up to make up stories and act them out?

Make your own Christmas cards or gift tags from old cards and magazine cuttings. You can get cheap card from discount booksellers. Make your own decorations...or gingerbread house. There are loads of ideas on the internet for crafts. We once made a paper wreath for the front door made from little ones hand prints. That idea was from the web.

Does she like to cook? Could you bake some cakes/biscuits for Christmas?

My DD is slightly older now, but we have obviously been through the 6 year old phase. Really popular things in out house are baking, walking the dog, knitting, crochet and playing games - DD has loved Monopoly (junior to start with) and cludeo for many years. We also do some types of gardening together like potting up plants in hanging baskets etc.

Make popcorn garlands (thread popcorn onto cotton)?

Any local attractions nearby that are worth a visit? Cinema? Film night at home in pj's and hot chocolate?

go to a family friendly carol service at a local church -doesnt matter what religion or not you are . the ritual and atmosphere is nice

walks, or local bus or train, getting out every day for at least an hour

cinema
garden centres

look in local paper and online and at venues for free xmas craft sessions eg at local library , shopping community and garden centres etc (they clear the mess!!)

change your nickname - choose something positive !

dd is almost 6 and she loves it most when we play with her dolls house together. she usually plays it on her own when I am cooking/cleaning/tidying.
figure out what she likes doing best and then do it.

Monetbyhimself · 09/12/2013 22:26

Lots of great ideas. If you're not into bsking, some tubes of ready made icing, sprinkles and bought biscuits can be as much fun with less hassle! Outdoor chalks for a dry day ? We've created whole streets in the back yard.

I bought cupcake ready mix stuff with Disney princess decorations to stick on. My 4 yo loved mixing, baking, icing, and choosing her fave princess'.
Cheesy, but kept her entertained.

We've been to Winter wonderland in Hyde park the other week. Free entry, but you have to pay for rides, food, drink etc. Has a Xmas market.

Play dough, craft stuff to make decorations for the tree, beads to make necklaces, go on train journey somewhere nice. A df of mine takes her dd for a baby chinos and cake as a treat when they've been out. She's only 6 too. Looks very civilized. Proper ladies that do afternoon tea.

Frozen's on in the cinema too, that's had some rave reviews.
