My first crisis...

I posted a few days back re: milestones etc I'm only a few weeks in and I've just discovered my first major crisis!

How the hell do you get in an attic!? There's no one I can ask to help except EXDP and I don't want to rely on him. So what are my options lovely vipers?

Have you got a hatch or covering to take off

CaptainSweatPants · 15/10/2013 16:58

We have a pole we push the loft hatch with & it magically opens and stairs come down

I wish I had one of those captain! Maybe I was a bit ambiguous in my post, it's not that I don't know how to get up there, it's that I can't! Big hole in the ceiling that's covered (I got that off) but I'm scared of heights and even if I was brave enough to get to the top of the ladder, I haven't got the upper body strength to pull my myself up.

I'm sure there'll be more disasters to look forward to Grin I hurt my back putting the bin out last week, but at least I remembered it had to go out, otherwise the house would be over following with nappies Blush

Have you a neighbour you could ask? I rely on mine for lots since being single Grin

chocolatespiders · 15/10/2013 19:07

What do you need to go up for I tend to just stand on ladder a put stuff around the opening or within distance of a broom which I use to drag things towards me

RitaFajita · 15/10/2013 19:30

I don't use mine for the same reason. Pain in the bum though having Xmas decs and suitcases etc in house!

Sasquatch75 · 15/10/2013 19:59

Lol same problem here! My loft hatch is massive and really heavy... Am planning on asking my brother or a male friend :)

therewearethen · 15/10/2013 20:52

Unfortunately there's stuff I need up there, my family came for a visit a few months back so EXDP put all the things I didn't need up there so the spare bedroom was clear for them to stay. There's another pushchair, cosy toes and clothes which I now need as DD2 seems to grow daily!

Get a friend to help if you can. I did that the first time, they `watched' Grin while I then had a go at doing it on my own and I can't say I enjoy doing it now but I can do it and limit what is up there .. do we ever really need all that stuff?

BlackeyedSusan · 16/10/2013 00:26

get a friend round to stand at the bottom of the ladder. before you know it you will be up there laying insulation etc...

Onebuddhaisnotenough · 17/10/2013 10:47

Loft hatchesand blocked toilets - the only time I missed twatty ex Grin

TwoStepsBeyond · 17/10/2013 10:55

If you do go up yourself use a proper stepladder, not a normal ladder. I know someone who shattered her arm when the ladder slipped and she got her arm trapped under it as she fell. Being all capable and independent is all well and good, but make sure to do it safely.

I had the same problem after stbxh left - I got someone round to put in a ladder that's fitted to the hatch and folds away. Well worth the money to know it's one less thing I needed him for.

Divinity · 17/10/2013 18:19

With my stepladder I can only reach so far into the loft so I bought one of those telescopic ladders. On the rare occassion I must get into the attic to get stuff I use that. Just watch your fingers putting it away.

It's not as good a solution as a fitted ladder in the loft but it will do.
