Training courses?

I'm starting to think I'll have to go back to work this time next year when my youngest starts the school nursery. My mum will be retired too so will be able to help more with childcare :)

I've heard that if you're on benefits, you're entitled to free training courses? Does anyone know what sort of courses these are and where I can find out more information?

They are usually fairly basic accredited courses such as Level 1 or 2 Literacy, Numeracy or a certificate at that level in a vocational subject such as Childcare if you have no previous L2 qualifications and/or you may have to be claiming JSA, ESA or IS with a work condition. Your local FE college or Adult Education provider should have details of what is available locally.

I doubt you'd be eligible for funding at that level unless specifically for vocational or upskilling. Most funding is now going towards first qualifications and basic skills. There is a new Advanced Leaning Loan for those over 25 though which may enable you to retrain.

LIZS is not entirely correct. If you are claiming certain benefits you may be eligible for help with some of your university fees. There is a factsheet from Gingerbread here: www.gingerbread.org.uk/factsheet/14/Money-for-further-education-students

Or, there is a scheme via the Open University to begin studying for just £25 which looks like it may be relevant to your situation: www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/qualification/ways-to-pay/access-to-success.htm
