How much do you spend on birthdays?

bubs is 2.5 and her birthday is very close to christmas. in previous years I would spend $500 per birthday and $500 per Christmas. now she has too many toys and doesn't appreciate them (doesn't play with most). There's little left to buy and being a single parent I can't afford to be spending that much. How much do you spend. what's the norm?

Why dollars? Or should that be £?

I spend around 100£ on each child's birthday and that includes the party!

About 50 on a main gift and 30 on bits and pieces. I spend more at Christmas but I celebrate Christmas far more than birthdays. When dc were as young as yours top line was 50 in total, mine are teens now.

I've only just become a single parent so am not sure yet! Previously we've spent around £120 per child, but I guess we'll be sharing this cost now...

Between 40-50 per child per celebration. Sometimes slightly over at Christmas if you include stocking fillers.

PeriodMath · 06/08/2013 17:30

Assuming you mean pounds not dollars (although actually either way), nowhere near that much! We have a good household income too but would just never waste so much money on a toddler. They don't want or need it. One or two things for birthday, cost varies, so far it's been no more than £50 I think. DS is only 3. Christmas tends to be more bit to fill up a stocking bit still would be surprised if it reached £100.

Money does not = love.

PeriodMath · 06/08/2013 17:32

Btw, my main reason is that I can't stand houses swimming in toys that nobody plays with. It's just colorful clutter.

absentmindeddooooodles · 06/08/2013 17:40

I've never decided what to buy ds based on the cost, or how much I would usually spend. He usually gets one big thing....trike, play kitchen etc, then a few bits and bobs. Never anywhere near the amount you mention. He's only 2, and has had about £50 spent on each birthday. I did splurge once and buy him a little tykes wooden kitchen, but it was more of an investment. Didn't want to get a plastic one as he would break it in seconds.

I think Christmas this year will be about £100 as he'd love a trainset, and again, I'll try and find him a nice wooden one so it does not break quickly. Just that and some new PJs etc ( family tradition) and stocking.

Probably about £100 to £120 including a party but i dont share the costs with ex, he doesnt have anything to do with what I arrange.

I usually buy a main present but this year her party is costing more than i would usually spend so she has several small presents all less than £15.

I spent about £50 on presents and about the same again on the party for DD's 2nd last week. Bubble machine reduced to £7.50, party bag bits on bulk from ebay and invites/party bags and some food from Poundland and home made cake and sarnies. Main expense was her dress reduced in the sale, but still more than most of the other bits for her party itself!

WorkingSingleMum · 06/08/2013 23:33

I'm am aware that money does not equal love. PeriodMath I resent that statement. I simply wanted to know how much other mothers spend. There's no need for such comments.

Surely how much you spend depends on how much you can afford or want to spend. I'm not going to say how much I spend, it's an awful lot more than some and probably less than others.Smile

This year (due to astounding amount of toys in my house) I will be buying some highly practical presents for 2 birthdays and Christmas! Art materials as always... One child will get a new bed and both children will get new good quality duvet covers, sheets, pillows etc. Both will get new towelling dressing gowns. And one child will be getting a cool alarm clock. There won't be much money left over for toys after all this! :-)

FizzlingFireboxes · 08/08/2013 11:45

I've spent £60 on each of mine this year, their birthdays are fairly close together so it's an expensive month.
Christmas probably the same.
