Teenager going to college - any grants/help?

My friend is in the last stages of her divorce. Her DD, aged 16, has just left school and has been accepted to college 30 miles away for A levels. The train season ticket is going to be around £2000 a year.

She doesn't know where to ask if there is any way of getting any assistance with the fare, or living expenses etc. She's very new to 'single parenting'. Any advice will be really appreciated.

She will have to apply to the college. They have a fund to help parents on low incomes. There may be some info on the college website.

A friend of mine did that for A levels and bought herself a small scooter to do the trip on - not sure how the costs would compare once you've added in insurance, etc - but quite possibly less than £2000. They don't use much fuel.

Oh, and she can continue to claim child benefit and tax credits to cover living expenses if her DD is still in education.

Thanks purple she's already sorted the child benefit and tax credits, pretty sure she won't go for the scooter though, it's 30 miles each way and her DD is only just 16.

brightermornings I'll let her know to ask the college, I don't think she's done that yet.
