Yesterday i printed off 14 of my CV's & handed them into, sure start childrens center, infant, junior, high schools, pre-schools, nurseries, youth center, day carers and a charity that has many jobs to do with children such as counselling, childcare, youth work, special needs etc. When handed to each of them i was told "Im sorry we have no vacancies but we will hold on to your CV if you would like to do some voluntary work?" Much as thats appriciated, will it give me a job within 6 months??? Im waiting to hear from the only pre-school with a vacancy. Im panicing now.

Sad it's a really hard time job wise at the moment Have you looked at job sites online for vacancies?

Perhaps you need to widen your search outside your preferred area and then once you have a job you can you keep searching for your ideal role.

I would try emailing it as well as handing in a hard copy - some places are more electronic in how the keep things. But it's tough to get work. Voluntary work can help you. No guarantees, but you could do just very part time as a possible foot in the door.

Are you looking for a term-time job? If so, your local council or county website might have a page for education vacancies (I know ours does).

But from what I hear they're like gold dust Sad.

Voluntary work would help, if they have a vacancy, they're most likely to offer it to their volunteers. You may get offered part time work or maternity cover. Even if you still want to look elsewhere, the fact that you are doing voluntary work will put you at an advantage and fill a gap in your CV. Often volunteers get offered great training opportunities and the chance to join courses offered to staff.

I do voluntary work for two years. When I split from ex I needed a job on a hurry to be able to pay my mortgage so had to leave and go back to the industry I worked in before having DS. I kept looking for paid work doing what I did as a volunteer and eventually got it. Without the voluntary work I would not have got it.

Don't think of it as working for them for free but think of it as getting free training and skills.

I'd love to go back to voluntary but it doesn't count towards job seekers so I'd need a job by 6 months. I can't go further than here because I can't drive, public transport would mean I'd have to start work after 9 & finish around 2 to be home to get DD from school. After school care is very expensive around here. Sad I'm really not confident about this. It wouldn't be so bad if I was allowed to do voluntary again but it puts moving into my own house under stress. I can't get my own place without a long term, term time job.
