Divorce

Hello. I really want to start the divorce process with my ex, who I split with last July. We talk a lot and are on goood (ish) terms. We both have new partners now and I would really like to get the ball rolling with the divorce.

But I haven't got a clue where to start?! I have tried googling it but I just get more confused and smothered in adverts for "quick divorce solutions" etc.

I don't actually know how to do it at all! I am on benefits - will there be any costs involved in the divorce at all? Where do I start? Is it going to be really stressful?

I am taking anit depressants and I would really like to get off them at some point this year, hopefully in the next couple of months, but I know I can't do it until I have got rid of all the stress related to my husband.

I would be very very grateful of any advice you can give me. I am a regular but I have name changed. Smile

Thanks for the link, its very helpful. I spent a lot of time looking in to it last night and although I feel a bit clearer, I am still very confused about the costs involved and fees and legal aid etc.

I literally have no money to spare on this at all, but I really want to end this marriage.

You need to take 4 steps

  1. Petition which is basically one of you asks the courts for a divorce. You have to fulfil the court requirement of providing a legal reason for divorce
  2. State arrangements for children complete a form stating how many children are involved and what is going to happen to them
  3. Financial Order which is a form stating what your assets and debts are and how you will deal with them and lay out a plan for child maintenance and any other financial stuff
  4. Divorce receive a nisi which is acknowledging a legal right to divorce and 6 weeks and 1 day after that you can apply for a full divorce

You can get all forms from the court.

If you DIY the forms are free and the court fee comes under £700 I think. If I were you I'd get a solicitor to look over your financial form
