Hi everyone, hope you are all enjoying your new years eve.

Basically I live alone with my son who is 2 and 2months. I am 23. My mum has just broke up with her other half (not my dad, they broke up years ago) and she just asked me how I would feel about her and my half-sister moving in with me and my son. I actually would love it as i do get lonely and my son loves his little auntie (shes 6 bless her). Me and my mum are really close and we are seriously considering it, however, would I lose my Income Support benefit? Would they expect my mum to look after me/pay for me??

I dont work, im a mum and go to college full time. my mum works 16 hours per week so doesnt earn alot atall.

Any help would be much appreciated.

ps. i know my rent will go up coz at the mo i get it all paid, but obviously my mums wages will be taken into account.. but will the council and income support still give me money for me to support my son or will they say no coz my mum earns a wage??

Im so confused. Please help if possible xx

I'm not entirely sure, so hope someone comes along to help you soon, but when I lived at home with my mum, after having my 1st DC, I got income support, and CB and my mum was not expected to support me.

Not sure if this has changed now, it was a long time ago.

Forgot to mention, it was my mum's house (rented) so my mum paid the rent/council tax and had her wages. Mum worked full time and had a p/t job on top of that too, and it didn't affect my IS at all.

Your best bet would be to speak to the Lone Parents Advisor at the Job Centre and ask them.

How many bedrooms do you have? As far as your housing allowance claim goes, I'm pretty sure you would continue to get the rate for the amount of bedrooms you are entitled to- so if you are in a 3 bed but only need 2, you'd get 2 bed housing allowance (if that makes any sense?!)

You wouldn't lose your income support.

I'm only kind of guessing, so as SaggyHairyArse (I typed that giggling!) suggested, your best bet is your Lone Parent advisor.

I enquired recently and was told that if I lived with my Mum I'd be able to claim income support.
I have no idea about housing benefit though sorry.

It wont affect your IS, but I'm surprised that you're getting that if you're a f/t student.

Housing benefit has something called a 'non-dependent deduction' which would apply in a case like this. There is basically a sliding scale of how much your Mum would have to contribute to the rent. I dont know if this scenario is too complicated for entitledto.com but you could try. Otherwise try CAB. Please go to someone impartial like them rather than a lone parent adviser, who has their own agenda to push.

You would stop getting yoour 25% single person discount on your ctax and your ctb would be reduced just like your HB.

crazyhayz yes you will still get your I/S also your housing benefit will only be reduced by the amount your mother is contributing to the houshold if she is. It sounds daft but your mam and your little sister would basically be lodgers, the reason for this is that your house/tenancy is in your name. You do not need to go to your job center about your rent , go to your local housing benefit advisor (local housing office) explain that you are thinking of letting your mother and sister move in with you BUT you need to know how it will affect your H/B ok.
I hope it works out for you.

daddydaycare51 · 05/01/2011 14:01

Hi again can i just add that your childtax will not be reduced as this is money belonging to the child NOT the adult and is what the child is entitled to ok. This I know from experience.

Hi
you can do courses at college as long as you have checked with jobcentre and income support.
