Hi, going to London 16th-19th October, family of 4. Kids are 10 and 12 and premier inn double beds or and sofa bed are now too cramped for us. We had a cramped trip to Bath last year and vowed never again.
I’ve looked on booking.com and Airbnb.
We will be doing the main sights and don’t mind tube travelling.
I’d like to stay somewhere where the area is nice. I saw an Airbnb in Whitechapel but it said the area was “gritty” and “less salubrious”. Any advice on specific airbnbs or cheap hotel in nice areas. Thanks in advance. X

Oh god no, do not book that Airbnb!! Tbh at this stage, if you’re going next week, you’ll have to throw more money at it. I’m a Londoner who now lives elsewhere and so I have had to book accommodation when visiting, and understand your struggle. Beware of thoughts of going further out and travelling in - it will be exhausting and use up valuable time you could be enjoying. I’ll have a look and put some links here of places I would consider in your position, I’ve stayed in a hotel that was walkable to the south bank which was ideal for our purposes. Just need to remember the name!

We were using a Premier Inn family room until our two DS were 17 and 15!

How much time are you actually going to spend in the room? If you are out every day then it really shouldn’t be a problem, surely. It’s only 3 nights Confused

Have a look at Youth Hostels. You can book a private room

Get on the All Accor app and have a look at Ibises/Novotels etc. You’ll get a member’s rate. I would choose this hotel, in your position. We actually stayed at the Ibis right next door because it was cheaper than the Novotel but you could access their pool, but for your dates the Novotel is cheaper! I’d grab it, it seems a good deal. Walkable and also good for short public transport trips. The area is fine too, and you’re in a proper hotel.

Park plaza Westminster bridge? Rooms were massive - king bed one side bathroom in middle to divide and double other side. 2 tvs too?!?!!! Also had fridge and microwave. Prices vary by the day, but good location, pool and def enough space.

Have a look at the Hilton Canary Wharf, if your kids can share a sofa bed they have availability on your dates for a king room with sofa bed within your budget.

or Wilde Aparthotels at Aldgate

Novotel Greenwich would also be doable. It’s just one 20 minute train straight into London Bridge and should be within budget. Decent breakfast and the hotel is right next to the station

Don’t do airBnB in London, we had a terrible experience last time we did that.
I would book a premier inn, we stayed at the PI St Pancras last time we went, very convenient and comfortable, was about £200 a night with breakfast

Ps we had a double bed and 2 singles so didn’t feel cramped

We stayed at the Premier Inn at Westminster. It was HORRENDOUS.

I would go for 2 nights and spend more on accom, or go capsule hotel.

Whitechapel is fine. Whether the AirBNB is fine has nothing to do with Whitechapel and everything to do with the AirBNB.

I live in Whitechapel and have done for many years. I work in the City in banking, my downstairs neighbour is a GP and my upstairs neighbour is a surgeon. Next door is a personal trainer and opposite me is a barrister. So yes, all of Whitechapel is utterly gritty and a salubrious den of inequity.

@GBR1980 if you want to share the link to the AirBNB (not sure if MN has blocked the PM feature at present?), I’m happy to have a look at the location and let know you if it’s somewhere to avoid or not.

Thanks everyone for your comments- we ended up booking premier inn in Aldgate. The room had a double and 2 singles which worked fine.
It was great as our first family trip and we will be more organised and book slightly more central next time although kids lived the tube and buses.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
