Living in Kew (near Kew Gardens) or Putney near the Heath

Hi,

I am looking at moving into London and getting a flat either at Kew or Putney.
The flat at Kew is near the Gardens and the Putney flats near the heath.
I have never lived south of the river and am concerned about plane noise. Both places are flats which is what is affordable. Any advice about living in either area much appreciated.

thanks

Oh! Lucky you @samsnet . I would think about whether I would spend lots of time on the heath or whether I would rather get more pleasure from frequent visits to Kew Gardens?

I would do some research and clarify the extent and degree of plane noise if you think it would reduce your enjoyment of your property a great deal.

My vote is for Kew.

The plane noise in Kew is pretty bad, you must visit before making a decision.

The planes coming in to land fly directly over Kew Gardens. It's a lovely area though.

thanks all. I have stayed in Kew a year back and I sort of got used to the planes but it impacted my enjoyment of Kew Gardens. Putney maybe easier and its not a long ride from Putney from Kew should I want to go.

The other advantage of Kew was that it is closer to Chiswick and getting out of London

I am guessing The Kew option is near the tube station rather than the green/bridge? It’s a very nice area but you can’t go for a walk in the Gardens every day and the plane noise is significant. Putney is further out and harder to get around by car as the high street/bridge and Fulham Palace Road are hellish. How near the tube would you be? I’d prefer Kew on balance

It’s very easy to get out of London from Putney Heath via A3

Davros · 09/10/2025 23:08

I meant getting further into London or generally round and about

lucya66 · 09/10/2025 23:09

I lived in Putney and liked it. Nice part of London. I never paid attention to the planes.

I agree, and there are also thousands of people walking past every single day. No wonder all the houses have shutters, must be like living in a goldfish bowl.

Its more halfway between the rail station and the tube station, so either are doable. Both places have busy bridges and I have never lived on the south side of the river before.

I guess they both have advantages and disadvantages but I dont think I would want to live with the constant plane noise.

I fully appreciate the busyness of Fulham Palace Road and around Putney. I guess I will have to see what is available and see which flat is the nicest.

I will also look at Barnes

thank you all for the feedback.

Barnes is a nightmare traffic wise due to the long term closure of Hammersmith Bridge. However, I lived there for years and barely noticed the plane noise, you really do get used to it after a few weeks. Out of Kew & Putney, I'd go with Kew, the transport options for Putney Heath are limited to buses to Putney or Barnes stations, and at least with Kew you have tube, trains and buses.

SilkAndSparklesForParties · 10/10/2025 14:59

Putney hands down. The Wimbledon branch of the District line is far more reliable than the the Richmond bit to Kew and beyond. Putney is zone 2. Plenty of buses to the west end and A3 connects to M25, or turn left before the high street for M4/40.

I may be biased but it's far more central than Kew and the since Concorde was canned, plane noise is unnoticeable.

Thanks all I just need to view properties and see what I like

I visited Chiswick and preferred it to Putney simply because of the wider pavements. I didnt like Richmond for the same reason, the high street is jammed.

I realise Chiswick is not Kew but its much closer

Chiswick is a great idea, I know it well.

Mayim · 22/10/2025 22:38

I would look at Putney or Chiswick over Kew. Both have plenty of shops, as well as local entertainment. There are also lots of transport connections. I live in Chiswick and would absolutely recommend it. I particularly like tge range of different markets on a Sunday - there is a cheese market, a flower market and soon. There is always something to see or do. There are few shops in Kew and you would need to travel to a high street for major shopping.
