To move or not to move

Like many families before us, we are thinking of plotting a move out of London but I am very torn and would love to hear from those who have done it or are considering it. I'll give a bit of context first.
The move would be to South Edinburgh, where I grew up. My husband is from the outskirts of Manchester, has lived in London since he was a student and loves his job here. I have lived here for 15 years and can work anywhere. We are both now in our late 30s. We have a 4 year old and 7 month old. We are really happy with our childcare set up and primary school offer here. But in the long run, the secondary options are preferable to us in Edin (both state and private) and I am interested in a slight change of pace. Plus my parents are not getting any younger and I have no siblings. I am also mindful that it is harder to make friends and find your feet in a community when your kids are older, hence moving sooner? Will it be easier on the children if the move is when they are as little as possible? But will we miss the sunshine?! Reflections/advice welcome.

I could have written this post! We are taking the plunge and just sold our place. Hoping to have moved by end Aug. Our DC is 4 so starting school in Dec.
job wise we can work remotely mostly, and will commute into London (2hrs) twice a week. We are also thinking long term. Private school fees are also slightly cheaper where we are going.

I think you should go for it.

Haha! Good to know we are not alone. Have you been discussing it for a while?
I think I feel apprehensive about that first 18 months ish when we miss our close friends and community whom we've got to know gradually, mainly through having a family. We would effectively be starting again. I think it gets harder to do that as you get older. It will also be a bit of a wrench for our eldest, who has been in a nanny share arrangement since she was 11 months and is v close to the little girl of the other family. But we would be closer to grandparents, who are brilliant. I realise we are really lucky to be able to contemplate these two options and probably just need to get on with it, either way.

We’ve been thinking about it for 2 years and now is the right time as she’s about to start school. We have good friends here and will be sad to leave them but they wouldn’t be going to the same school anyway and I expect we will see less of them as the school life starts. Likewise you will definitely make new mum friends at the school.
Like you my parents are old (mine in their 80’s but mobile and alert) so I want to make the most of the time we have left with them before that option is taken from us.
One other attractive factor is we are also going to be close to mortgage free.
