Thefts, phone snatching, intimidation in London

Hi, we moved from Sydney to London (Hither Green) 4 months ago.
Weekly I see at least 1/2 posts of someone saying that their phone has been either snatched or they were intimidated or even shown a knife for their phones.
I have a daughter who will start secondary school next year and this makes me really nervous.
Does this happen everywhere in London? More in some areas than others?
Are there other areas in South East zone 3/4 a little more safe where perhaps this doesn’t happen that often?
Thank you

I live the other side of London and it’s rife, although it’s never happened to me- yet! I try not to use my phone on main/busy streets and keep it in a zipped pocket when out. I was using it for the tube but have gone back to contactless now.
Happened to my teen son a couple of years ago but he amazingly got out of the situation.

I live in Lee, frankly there is little to worry about. You just need to be sensible, just like you would be in Sydney. If you look for bad, scary news you will find it. Yes there's crime but no more so than in any other city.

idratherbedrawing · 24/10/2024 20:26

Phone snatching is sadly quite common all over London, though it's also never happened to me. I can see why it occurs- phones are v valuable and very easy to steal. I was actually just thinking it's odd it didn't happen all over the country and I wonder if it will get to other places with lots of pedestrians / less car use so more people are out and about with phones in hand (this article suggests it's a London issue www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/oct/09/they-rob-you-visibly-with-no-repercussions-the-unstoppable-rise-of-phone-theft). It's def worth being vigilant when carrying around an item which is may well be worth more than £500 and usually more than £100. However I think being threatened with a knife is rare statistically. I think you are probably noticing the bad stories there. And I wouldn't have thought this is more of an issue in Hither Green than other areas.

I've lived in London all my life, I'm 64, I've never been a victim of crime. I've seen a handbag snatch once. DD is 21, it's never happened to her, never happened to DH or any other family. I've lived all over. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but you need to be sensible. London is very safe

Plexie · 24/10/2024 20:32

Where are you seeing these posts? Just in your local area?

I'm in SE London but not aware that phone snatching is a regular occurrence in my area.

MugPlate · 24/10/2024 20:32

Phone snatching is everywhere. Check the school if there’s a local street patrol you can join for morning/afternoon sessions. The visibility of adults is supposed to deter the snatchers.
Also don’t give her a valuable smartphone. If they take a phone and it isn’t top notch they mostly throw them away.

cocoloco23 · 24/10/2024 20:33

I lived in London for 25 years, and was only once the victim of a crime (robbed at a cash point, no violence involved).

I did see two phone snatching incidents - both times, the victims were standing on a pavement near the kerb, and the thieves were on bikes. It made me very wary of getting my phone out in the street - if I need to do so, I now always step into a doorway.

DeborahVance · 24/10/2024 20:38

There does seem to be a spate of this at the moment, but Hither Green won't be worse than anywhere else. I don't have my phone out now when I am looking for directions, but that is just common sense. FWIW I have lived in London for over 30 years now and have never been mugged, so I wouldn't worry too much

Anicecumberlandsausage · 24/10/2024 20:59

Just take the usual sensible precautions. Crime goes through "trends" and the current one is phone snatching. In another few months it'll be something else.

Veteran resident of this London for 27 years. The city & I have a toxic relationship with, but nevertheless I've never been a victim of street crime.

I don't look for bad scary news, I joined a few local FB groups so I could get to know the area and these messages pop at least twice a week.
I know this happens everywhere but definitely not with the same frequency.

My local FB group and the FB groups from the surrounding areas.

Just remember that nobody posts about good news! I live in SE London too, last time I had anything pinched was decades ago.
The common sense advice for any youngster is to have a cheap PAYG phone for school and in general not to take any phone out whilst walking around the streets.

Apolitia · 25/10/2024 09:29

Oh god those FB groups are cesspits of bad news stories and drama llamas. Nexdoor is the same if not worse. It’s all vehicle crime, abandoned cars, warnings about scams, “what were all those police cars/ the helicopter/ ambulances doing at xyz” rubber-necking, dog poo and lost cats. Stay away, you’ll be much happier!

I've lived in London nearly 30 years and have raised my kids here. I'm in Chiswick, West London. London is a weird place in that it is, day to day, a really safe city, overwhelmingly. But some parts of London are a bit wild and woolly.

That said, my son, at 17, was beaten and mugged at knife-point for his phone in green, leafy, lovely Chiswick. Male teens are definitely a target because they have nice phones.
He's almost 23 years old now (with a bad phone!) and sailed through uni (UCL near Euston) and living on his own since 19. He's very street smart but unfortunately, this is born of experience.
He now lives in Elephant and Castle where I don't take my phone out at all once I leave the station to walk to his flat. Phone snatching is rife around there.

In all my years, in my own area, including my own son's mugging, I've witnessed the very occasional crime; we're talking once every 3-5 years. In Elephant and Castle, I see a phone snatching nearly every time I visit my son. It's a different ball game; different demographic, more populated, busier, hectic... all these things give way to opportunists. I think the more 'urban' and busier the environment, the more you take the necessary precautions, i.e. put your phone away, look out for cyclists. My son uses his phone when he's out and about, just shields it with his hands. I straight-up keep mine in my bag until I'm at a restaurant/pub/meeting point (in his area).
I do notice a lot of people don't walk around with their phones in their hands nearly as much. And I notice this because far less people walk right into me/my kids because they're so busy looking down at their phones, texting. There is an up side to crime! I'm kidding, of course.

Just keep your wits about you but don't be scared. London is definitely not a frightening city. It has its sharp edges and smooth bits like all big cities. It's gritty but not a death trap. Definitely walk around with caution but not fear. You definitely don't have to have your back up all the time.

Startingagainandagain · 25/10/2024 09:55

I lived in London for 25 years and never had any issue like this and I mainly lived in East London so not the safest of environment :).

But there is no denying that it happens, so you need to make sure you don't leave you bag open, keep an eye on your surroundings and don't look lost...

Basically just the same as any big city.

LatteLady · 25/10/2024 10:16

OP, which groups do you belong to? Come hither to Hither Green is probably the most useful but then the biggest issue tends to be having your catalytic converter nicke!

winetimenow · 25/10/2024 10:31

Some people love the drama on those groups! Ours is all police helicopters and car crashes.
Phone snatching can happen anywhere but good to brief your daughter on safe behaviour with it... I don't think leaving Hither Green would make much difference!

Barbadossunset · 25/10/2024 10:43

London is very safe.

Really? A phone is stolen every 6 minutes in London. It doesn’t sound very safe to me.

In a city with 6 million residents, and hundreds of thousands more travelling into work or visit every day? You can live in London for decades and never be a victim of crime. You increase your chances even more by being sensible. Nobody needs to be trying to walk the streets peering at a phone and literally holding out an expensive device for a passing chancer to take because you haven’t noticed anyone approaching.

Twixfixing · 25/10/2024 10:54

It’s very common even in the leafy parts. Some of the outer boroughs are probably safer than inner ones but phone snatching is everywhere.

This might sound victim blaming but the trouble is people particularly younger ones aren’t often very streetwise. Don’t walk around holding your phone, don’t have your head down nor taken in your surroundings, take an earbud out so you can hear. Criminals look for opportunity so use your body language to be seen & also see

Twixfixing · 25/10/2024 10:56

I know lots of school kids who have been mugged at knifepoint unfortunately.

Usou · 25/10/2024 11:12

I imagine it’s a London issue more so because there’s more footfall and pedestrians through London.

Who's doing all this phone snatching?

Isn't it for the Chinese market? Resold in an instant

AHFBridport · 25/10/2024 11:27

As a grammar pedant walking along the South Bank last week I found all the posters asking 'Who's Eyes are on your Phone?' pretty criminal. But didn't see any phone snatching.
