Area near Canary Warf for young couple?

My son is contemplating relocating from Edinburgh to Canary Warf. His partner is going to be going with him. Any suggestions about a nice place for them to be looking at renting? I think somewhere with green spaces a bit of a village feel and a reasonable commute - he'll be working long hours and if he doesn't have to add in a huge amount of travel, then they will hopefully settle in a bit more easily. He wants to be able to get home before his partner is in bed! They could choose to move further away in future if they decide to at a later date... I've not been down to London so can't really advise. He's obviously looking into it himself but wondered if I could add any value to the discussion! Thank you.

Exciting move! Just to say my now husband and I lived in Canary Wharf pre kids, just the 2 of us and we absolutely loved it.

Our favourite place to live and we lived all over London. A lot of people say it's boring but it's really not - restaurants, bars, cinema, clean, good atmosphere, we always felt there was plenty on. It was a misconception that it was 'dead at the weekends' as we never found that though of course quieter. Great transport connections and my husband was a 10 min walk to the office which was ideal when he had early starts/late finishes. We look back on those days very fondly! Wherever he moves hope he enjoys it Smile

Greenwich Penninsula

Not Bethnal Green. It has its good parts, but still has a very gritty underbelly and I never felt safe walking home alone. Also not well connected for Canary Wharf.

For that budget I'd go for a flat in Borough.

Greenwich Peninsula has a lot more going on these days and a community is building up. One stop on the Jubilee Line.
However, Greenwich itself is nicer - huge royal park with an observatory, restaurants, gyms, bars, market etc plus you're right on the river. Walkable/cyclable to CW or DLR and 10 minutes on the overground to central London. They will love living in this area and it's not so frenetic as living very centrally but nicer (imo) than living in CW or the Isle of Dogs.

Hackney, Shoreditch etc are still hipster territory but can be quite 'gritty'.

All depends what vibe they're looking for - if they like Richmond, then they will like Greenwich or Blackheath.

Or, look along the Elizabeth Line or the Jubilee Line. Just ensure there are alternative routes in case of any issues with the line.

Thanks for the ideas! @careerandfam - that's super interesting. He did point out yesterday that currently he lives an hour away from the office (he walks there) so actually the commuting time won't be that different although he may not have the luxury of walking - but it would be nice if he did have the option... he's anticipating it's the end time that will change in general, not what time he's starting at....

@Bemusedandconfusedagain - that's interesting. I was reading the thread to my husband and I think that's what he said - he visited last year and during the day loved it but said he felt it was a bit dodgy at night.

@Turmerictolly Greenwich sounds like a really good option. And he's said a lot of his friends live around that area. Think he'll go down before he starts so they can explore some of the ideas. Thank you!
