Which musical for 7 year old?

My son has asked to go to Matilda the musical for his 7th birthday but the prices are out of this world! As it's his first west end trip i wouldn't want to get seats miles away so i reckon Matilda won't be possible. Which other musicals would be great for a 7 year old? (I know about the lottery and will apply but obviously not guaranteed!) Thanks all

Not sure there’s much difference in pricing between the shows really and you don’t need to be up close though get the full experience/enjoyment.

Matilda is a fantastic show and well worth seeing. The only other suggestion for a 7yr old would be Lion King which is really good.

I haven’t seen either of these but the Frozen or Shrek musical would be age appropriate.

The only one we have been to with our 7 year old is the Lion King. It was not cheap- I'm not sure any big name musical would be for good seats! But we got seats half the price of those in London by seeing it in the travelling show version at a smaller theatre near grandparents, if something like that might be an option.

I recently asked my son what the favourite show he'd seen was out of everything we'd been to, and he picked the Aladdin panto so that might be a good alternative as well for their age (appreciate it might be the wrong time of year for a birthday trip though).

I recall there was a Charlie and the Chocolate factory doing the rounds recently which might be worth looking into.

Frozen I personally didn’t think was that great and think was pricier than Matilda at the time - felt a bit ripped off

Matilda is very good and staged well - would imagine even seats high would be fine and it’s a great atmosphere show

Lion King is good but the kids found it less enjoyable than Matilda

haven’t seen Shrek

That's a shame; when I clicked on your thread title the answer in my head was Matilda.

Mrs Doubtfire The Musical is playing at the Shaftesbury Theatre now, it might be worth looking into.

Give your son what he asked for: the cheap seats at Matilda. If he enjoys it great! If he doesn’t like it well it was his choice.

This is the link for the lottery - £25 tickets. Obviously dates are limited but so much cheaper and you are very likely to get a ticket (I’ve tried 3 times and got tickets twice). I’m not the biggest fan of musicals but Matilda is absolutely brilliant!

You may get lucky with the lottery, I managed it to get tickets for me and my son. I would also recommend kids week-get a child's ticket free with an adult. Ticket sales gone up on the 10th June.

If he wants Matilda, I would personally make Matilda happen.

Google 'Kids Week' - half price theatre tickets in school summer holiday. They go on sale this week. Marilda will be popular so you need to be waiting when they are released - although sometimes they release a few more later on.
There will be lots of other shows that are equally as good but don't sell out so quickly.

We sat upper circle at Xmas - view was way better than I expected.

Helpaladyoutplease · 10/06/2024 16:57

Thank you all. Will definitely look into kids week! Am slightly worried he just won't be able to see further away either. Has medical condition which means severely myopic (minus 10) and has poor distance vision even with glasses - he's so sweet as well he would pretend at the time he could see and only admit later that he actually couldn't!

The Lion King, Matilda, Mrs Doubtfire and Back to the Future are all great for kids.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 10/06/2024 17:01

@Helpaladyoutplease worth calling and asking about access tickets - you may get a carer free. So then it may halve the price of the top tickets that are close.

This is a good shout. Also download the Today Tix app for good offers.

Kids week for sure!

you can check the view from the seat on various websites too - that might reassure you that you can see

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 10/06/2024 18:26

West end tickets pretty much cost much of a muchness - though some great suggestions here. We took DD to see Matilda aged 7 and she absolutely loved it, so did we, it is worth every penny.

Houseofdragonsisback · 13/06/2024 18:50

@SM33 thank you for the link, I didn’t know about it & won 2 tickets!

I would look into accessible seating for him I know they might be limited but it's worth going down that route. Ring the theatre and ask .

Opera glasses ( bit like binoculars) used to be very acceptable.
