Anyone moved from London to York?

I’m from York and my husband is from abroad, currently living in London. We have a toddler and are thinking of re-locating to York in a couple of years. The pull factors are we would have more space (we can’t afford a house in London, just a small flat), be close to grandparents, less pollution, safer environment, good train line to London and more nature.

Has anyone made the move? How was it? Any regrets? I’m a teacher so one thing I am concerned about is the lower salary in York compared to London.

Would love to hear any experiences!

The salary difference won't even be noticeable due to the massive cost of living increase of living in London!

I'm from york (now live in newcastle!) and left because teaching jobs were few and far between in york! Something to consider!

I’ve lived in both but at different ages and stages. I really like York, although prefer shopping in Leeds or Newcastle.

Most people I know who live there work in a different city/town, due to the ease of travel. Something to think about.

I'm not far from York and go to London quite a bit for long weekends. It's easy enough to get to from York, being on the main line.

London has plenty of green spaces too but it's the cost of living down there that would put me off. You can get a lot more for your money in York. York, itself, is a beautiful and historic city.

Can't help on the teacher jobs/pay as it isn't my area.

Not a fan of Newcastle or Leeds!

After 17 years in London, I moved to York in 2019. Best move I ever made. Property prices have rocketed in York in last couple of years. My council tax is more than London. I earn the same salary that I did in London, but there is nothing cheap about York!

I think you may be surprised at the cost and shortage of homes in York. Prices have risen insanely over the past couple of years and anything decent gets sold really quickly.

Be prepared for transport problems as the railways are getting more and more unreliable (son started working there 4 months ago and has had to travel 3 times for meetings in their London head office - not managed to get there yet due to train cancellations either due to line flooding or overhead wire failures!). Roads can be awful at peak times and buses are unreliable and routes can be problematic if you don't live/work on the same bus route.

They're not reasons not to move there, but if you're used to frequent/reliable public transport in London, you may be surprised by travel problems in and around York! It's a lovely city, but it's not without it's problems!

I moved from London to York several years ago. It is expensive to rent or buy property as previous posters have said but of course you will get more for your money in York than London. It's much cheaper to live in Pocklington.

I have found the train and bus services quite good. The problem is the traffic during peak hours. It takes forever to get from one side of the city to the other during peak travel times on buses.

I found it hard to make friends in York although people are quite friendly to say hello to. You probably won't have this problem if you already have contacts in York or if you have children there would be opportunities to meet other Mum’s etc.
