Have you ever asked your local councillor for help? How did it go?

I rent a private property in London, however my landlord has asked us to leave and I am waiting for a section 21 notice. According to my local council, Tower Hamlets (via the new homeless prevention department that exists) this should buy me up to 6 months.

2 years ago, I was in a similar situation and I was able to afford to rent another property. However renting a 2 bedroom house takes up all of my salary income and I am running out of options should I loose the case against my landlord.

I want to reach out to my local councillor, this one is also a cabinet member for housing needs and I’m hoping that they can give some advice or help.

Whilst I’d love some advice from other parents, I want to also know if your councillor has ever helped you? In any shape or form? How you approached them. As it feels like helpful local councillors are a thing of the past.

thanks

It wasn’t in London, but no they didn’t help. They just directed me back to the people who already hadn’t helped me.

Yes, I've found Councillors very helpful. Easier than starting with your MP

Going to the local councillor is the go-to for anyone unhappy about their housing situation. In my experience they will just redirect you to the correct department. In smaller towns the email from the councillor might hold a little weight - eg get picked up quicker, but I'd be amazed if this worked in London.

Doesn't work. I emailed my local mp and was surprised when they emailed back in a decent amount of time. But they redirected me to the local councils housing department to tell me that there is a lack of supply and too much demand which is rising and basically I would be waiting over 10+ years to get anything bigger than what I'm already in which is a studio with 3 small kids. They even suggested I go via private rented avenue but that's so uncertain that I'm just going to stay put as my child is in a really good school 🏫 so basically saying that MP in London don't hold much power but it's still worth a shot.
