Arriving in London next week and now the wonderful peeps at the RMT have blown a giant shaped boil in my holiday!!
I am staying in East Dulwich and looking for local points of interest in the surrounding areas that are accessible by foot/bus.. deciding to NOT hire a car this trip - but now thinking we should.

I assume the strikes are on both under and overgrounds?
Travelling to the usual tourist traps aren't off the table but they'll seem more difficult now and possibly overly congested.
Any suggestions to avoid the crazy?

The tubes and buses are all working as normal...so not sure what is such a big problem?

Ljc1985 · 18/07/2023 20:53

Depending what day you arrive next week is just tube and not train . From where you are staying I'm pretty sure you should be able to get a main line train to Victoria and most places are then totally walkable depending what sort attractions you want to see?

parietal · 18/07/2023 20:53

Get the Citymapper app and it will show you all the bus routes etc.

Ljc1985 · 18/07/2023 20:54

Sorry just to add. Weekend is train not tube. Next week is tube and not train . Most
Buses will operate as usual

sunshinesupermum · 18/07/2023 20:54

Check out TfL which will have all the info you need. East Dulwich is rather off the beaten track though. Do not drive yourself around London! Traffic is awful and there is the Congestion Charge which is supposed to deter drivers, but doesn't.

TakeMe2Insanity · 18/07/2023 20:54

Bus to brixton then get on the tube.

The tubes are on strike Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week (which has the knock on effect of busses being a nightmare).

TakeMe2Insanity · 18/07/2023 20:55

Failing that bus to brixton then buses to everywhere from there.

buses are NOT normal during tube or train strikes, they are basically unusable, as most people who want to get on them can't because there is no space

Throughabushbackwards · 18/07/2023 20:57

Spend a day at Brockwell Lido, you won't regret it!

Lamelie · 18/07/2023 20:58

12 bus goes to Whitehall
42 to Liverpool Street
You can walk to Peckham and Dulwich. You’ll be fine.

ginandmenthols · 18/07/2023 20:58

I live in ED - which side are you staying? Without tube or train you have Horniman Museum, Crystal Palace Park, Brockwell Lido or Beckenham Place Park for outdoor swimming. We are normally towards the end of the bus routes and very reliant on them - CityMapper is great - so can get most places quickly.

freecomsanex · 18/07/2023 20:58

From East Dulwich you can get the 185 straight to Victoria or the 197 to Tottenham Court Road - you're fine. If you want something a bit closer, Peckham or Crystal Palace are right on your doorstep.

Theredjellybean · 18/07/2023 20:59

Oh hell...I didn't realize tubes in strike..I googled it and cannot see anything about this .
And yes buses are awful if tube strikes on.
I can only find information on RMT...

hettiethehare · 18/07/2023 21:00

There are ways and means.

Super local things to do though that are walkable, short bus ride from East Dulwich - Dulwich Picture Gallery, Dulwich Village and a mooch round Dulwich Park.

Horniman Museum and gardens.

Mooch into Peckham to find food and have a poke around. Rooftop bars at the Bussey Building and Franks are nice.

Bus to Brixton and poke round, go to Brixton Village for food and atmosphere. Pop Brixon also good for food.

Herne Hill and Brockwell Lido also worth a visit (although the Lido is a bit manky at the moment and a PITA to get tickets for).

thecatwiththesilveryfur · 18/07/2023 21:18

The TFL website says that there will be a severely reduced service on Sunday. Is that not true? We're supposed to be going to see Frozen 😱

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 05:30

It is impossible to say whether you will be able to use buses. It is possible in these days when more people can work from home, that some buses will have space - but this is no means a given. Don't rely on it, and have a back up plan, map for walking, uber? etc. Uber and taxis may also be hard to get hold of, but on the other hand, more drivers may be making themselves available as it will be a good time to get customers

Good luck, I hope it works out for you. Just plan an itinary which concentrates on one small area of the city at a time, and have a plan B which is very local

wineymummy · 19/07/2023 06:02

Take/borrow/hire a bike?

TheCyclingGorilla · 19/07/2023 06:04

I live in ED. 176 goes to the West End and Waterloo. 185 goes to Vauxhall and Victoria. If you can schlep south the 363 goes to Crystal Palace park. There are Lime bikes you can use. Download the FreeNow app for taxis, hire bikes and scooters. Bear in mind Uber prices surge during a strike. It's not all lost, but it might take longer to get to places and the buses will be more crowded.
