Moving to London! Help on where to live….

hello all!

long story short I’ll be moving to London in a few months with my husband and toddler (he’ll be 2 by the time we move). Husband will be working in Canary Warf and would like a relatively easy commute to there (30-40 minutes by train/dlr/bus) but also maybe something he can e-bike to on nicer days. He won’t have to go in every day but would still like something east to get too.

Ideally I’d also like a location that is family friendly, I.e. parks, attractions, good schools, not too noisy/party, and relatively easy for groceries and food.

I’ve been looking in Greenwich but am open to other areas even further out of London. Ideally 3bedroom max 2,750 pm. All ideas and options are welcome!!

thank you in advanced!

adding in an edit!

husband wouldn’t mind an hour commute if it means better trade off in terms of housing (I.e. bigger space for same or less ££).

Greenwich is lovely, as is Blackheath. The DLR to Canary Wharf is really easy (from Lewisham and runs through Greenwich). Primary schools in Hither Green/Lee area are fantastic.

There used to be a website called commutefrom.com (or some like that) that maps commute time and house prices in London

Another vote for Greenwich or Blackheath. Or if you'd like something more central, anything on the jubilee line will work.

The Isle of Dogs is great. Parks. City farm. Good schools and easy commute to work. It is safer than Greenwich in terms of crime rate.

UnicornRidge · 13/12/2022 18:58

I have properties in the areas mentioned above. Frequent the Lee / Greenwich / Lewisham area. I would say the Tower Hamlets council have the best kids activities available vs Greenwich and Lewisham.
Long commute is not recommended as he will lose 2hr of quality time with the kids on the commute. The Lewisham and Greenwich councils don't find fund youth and children services as well as Tower Hamlets.
If you live in Isle of Dogs, you can walk to Greenwich via the foot tunnel. Best of both worlds. You can walk everywhere with the kids. Don't need a car.

If you don't mind not having access to community amenities like public swimming pool, library and quick access to public minor injury care as much, you can get nice houses in the Lee/Hither Green/ Ladywell / Blackheath area. You will need a car.

Would echo recommendation for Ladywell, specifically the streets between Ladywell and Lewisham stations for easy access to both DLR and trains into London Bridge and Charing Cross. Lovely family friendly area, two amazing parks (Hilly Fields and Ladywell Fields), independent shops, public pool (by Lewisham station), excellent primary schools.

Hither Green- the new blackheath

mortgagemusings · 24/12/2022 16:49

PS contrary to what pp said re Ladywell and surrounds, a car is absolutely not necessary. We haven't used ours for weeks.

You will need a car huh! You clearly don’t know the area at all- lewisham, Eltham, bromley, charlton all have public pools- libraries there’s loads (3 in Lee:/ hither green I can name)- minor injury units in lewisham and beckenham

TheScenicWay · 25/12/2022 08:47

Wanstead or south Woodford is nice. On the borders of Essex and easy access to lots of green areas.
It's on the central line so quick journey into central London.

UnicornRidge · 26/12/2022 16:47

@OnlyFoolsnMothers The Lewisham pool is opposite the station with see through glass that people leaving the station can take a peep inside.

Many in Greenwich borough have mixed gender shower. Not as many classes for kids as the Tower Hamlets pool. You don't need a car in the TH borough to get to the pools with kids, but you need one to get to the Greenwich borough pool, if you live in Blackheath, Lee, Hither Green or Ladywell.

Canada Water? Lovely place to live and great amenities.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 26/12/2022 16:58

Woolwich Shooters Hill Plumstead.

I'm in Woolwich myself, work in Canary Wharf and can be at work in less than 25 minutes.

Surrounded by green space and fantastic public transport options.

jay55 · 26/12/2022 18:07

The Elizabeth line has opened up a heap of options with a nice commute.
No need to travel for an hour or more.

Not that I'm any help with areas as I don't have kids. I work in CW and colleagues with young families live all over.

Best of luck.
