Paying for tubes

I'm sure this will be one of those blindingly obvious questions to anyone who knows, but I don't.

I'm down in London for work for pretty much the first time since Covid. I've - stupidly - managed to leave my Oyster card at home. The TFL website suggests I should be able to pay by credit card? Is that right? Literally just touch the credit card to the Oyster reader at the gates as I would have the Oyster card?

Is the price the same?

Thank you!

Yes as long as it’s a contactless credit card. Costs the same.

ZooTropia · 17/10/2022 07:41

Yes, this is correct. Just touch in and out as normal with the the same card, and it can even be cheaper this way!

FaintlyMacabre · 17/10/2022 07:41

Yes, you can use any contactless device to tap in and out. It will automatically calculate the best fare at the end of the day.

sashagabadon · 17/10/2022 07:41

Yes and yes, make sure you touch out too

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 17/10/2022 07:42

Yes just use our contact less card. I haven't used an oyster in years (live in London)

notdaddycool · 17/10/2022 07:42

Yes, actually think it’s cheaper. Just use the same card to tap in and out all week or you won’t get any of the piece caps. You can also use Apple wallet or even an Apple Watch, I think android phones too.

HairyMcLarie · 17/10/2022 07:43

Use your contactless credit or debit card or Apple Pay through your phone or watch. Tao just like an oyster card.

Ifailed · 17/10/2022 07:45

yes, make sure you use the same card for all tap in/outs. Haven't used an oyster card for years.

BookedOut · 17/10/2022 07:48

Yes. I would use a card rather than a phone if travelling at peak time, as the gates take a bit longer to respond to a phone and it’s frustrating when it’s busy. Also, be careful to avoid card clash - tap just that card, not a wallet or phone case with lots of cards in.

Brilliant, thank you so much everyone.

Also worth knowing that if you mess up which card you use (I did first time I did it) and use two different cards by mistake, there's a form you can do on the tfl website within a certain number of days and they refund one lot for you - I tapped in with one card and out with another so ended up with max fares on both I think. Should prob be called the numpty tourist form!
