Hello

I've got a ticket to London arriving at kings cross. I have been before but never solo and the tubes are making me a tad nervous as I'm not fluent alone. Can anyone recommend me of any areas or places to go please? I'm 29 if that's any help.

Also I wondered if I should try the buses instead of the tube?

I was thinking of looking around the knightsbridge area... and Mayfair. Ideas welcome

Buses are trickier than the tube. Knightsbridge is easy from kings cross - just get the westbound Piccadilly line and get off at the stop. There are multiple exits but don’t worry about that - just head up and use google maps to navigate if you need to

What are you going for? Are you staying somewhere? How many days?

Download the tune map app and work your routes out beforehand.

Personally I’d get a London A to Z and walk, some of the walls to the actual tube platform are long.

It’s quite easy to walk from place to place in a fairly short space of time.

I'm going for the day. I just thought I would go and explore for a change. Thank you I will download the app.

Leave the wandering around for when you feel more confident. I suggest you select a main thing to do and work your day around it.

Something that has worked for me is selecting a museum gallery exhibition, pair it with lunch in a nice place and a secondary visit to a close by attraction before taking the train back.

What do you like doing? Culture? Shopping? Bit of both? Would help us to help you if we knew

Titch67 · 26/02/2022 00:23

It's not the finding of thing's to do it's the whole going on holiday by myself...... being single...

Titch67 · 26/02/2022 00:25

I split with my partner and decided I need a holiday and sunshine too.

Trust no one, and assume pick pockets could be everywhere, then have a safe journey
Divebar2021 · 26/02/2022 00:33

Well I’m not sure I would pick Mayfair or Knightsbridge particularly… any reason you’ve chosen those areas ? I think if you’ve got a phone with maps you’ll be able to navigate no problem and walking can be so much more rewarding than the tube with the right shoes and weather. Is it going to be a weekday or weekend visit?

OnTheBoardwalk · 26/02/2022 00:35

I travelled and worked in London for many years. My first time as a tourist I loved the hop on hop off buses. Maybe do a round trip then see where you want to hop off.

Can take a while doing the tour but you can see the sights unlike the tube

viques · 26/02/2022 00:40

If I were you I would give Knightsbridge a miss, to be frank it can be a bit intimidating! It’s not actually somewhere I find very friendly and some of the shops are not terribly welcoming - more fool them!

I would head instead to somewhere like Marylebone High street. Lots of small independent shops, clothes, home wear, cheese, books, plus an Ortigia for smellies. There’s a nice little park if it’s a sunny day ( with prize winning loos as a bonus) , the Wallace collection for interest, lots of cafes for lunch. An alternative is the Covent Garden area, ditto for shops and cafes.

Both are easy to get to from Kings Cross. Use the TFL planner to plan your journey. Don’t worry about getting lost, everyone does sometimes, and it’s easy to find yourself again. Your bus and tube fairs will be capped if you use a card so you can hop on and off or change tubes as often as you need if you find yourself somewhere you weren’t planning to be.

I recommend the Citymapper app - it has all the transport, and gives walking directions too

MMBaranova · 26/02/2022 00:51

Yes to citymapper.

If you can, add a travelcard on your ticket (or use Oyster).

Have two places to definitely go to. I'd book anything clothes/designy at the V&A if there is an exhibition, but that is me.

If it is not raining, WALK. At least some of the time. You see so much more.

thingymaboob · 26/02/2022 00:52

Walk along the southbank from millennium bridge to Westminster. You can pop into Tate modern and lots of nice things to see.

Crunched · 26/02/2022 01:02

I think the London trip will have happened now.
