Working at London Bridge

My son will be working at London Bridge, he's straight out of uni and we don't know the area. Any advice on renting?

Loads of places are on the tube and train line into London Bridge. How central does he want to be?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 18/08/2021 09:28

What area?!

He won’t be able to afford to live IN London Bridge but there are loads of commutable places. We need more specifics/budget to answer helpfully.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 18/08/2021 09:36

Budget for rent?
Lots of my new graduate colleagues live in flat shares walkable to London Bridge.... Borough area, Bermondsey etc
Or it will be cheaper to share put of London but on a single train in to London Bridge eg South East London

Queenoftheashes · 18/08/2021 09:43

I used to commute from norwood junction, walking down from Crystal Palace, and the train is one stop / 12 mins to London Bridge.
It’s probably too far out for a youngster but it’s a cheap area with a fast commute if that’s what he wants

He'll have about £800 for rent and bills, ideally as central as possible or on jubilee or northern line please

Flat shares would be fine, what's the best way of finding one?

Good places get snapped up quickly

54321nought · 18/08/2021 09:54

He is not going to get onto the Northern or Jubilee line for that budget.

He should be looking along the network southeast train lines

Greenwich/woolwich/plumstead

he is most likely to be looking at a flat share, but he does need to be careful, some are not pleasant.

I would suggest aiming for a flat share of young working professionals

Egghead68 · 18/08/2021 09:55

Looks like London Bridge area is £900-1000 a month for a room in a shared flat. Bermondsey might be cheaper.

TedMullins · 18/08/2021 09:57

He really won’t want to live ‘as central as possible’. Very few people do, young house-sharing friends tend to be in zones 2/3 for a better deal and outside of work, people tend to find a community in their local area of friends to go out with to the pub etc. I’ve lived in London 7 years now and done all the house sharing in my 20s - for access to those tube lines and vibrant areas for a new graduate I’d suggest (in the north) Archway/Holloway road, Kentish Town, Kilburn, Willesden (in the south) elephant and castle, Stockwell, Balham, clapham, tooting, Bermondsey

burritofan · 18/08/2021 09:59

I used to work in London Bridge and had a houseshare in Brixton: the 133 bus or the 159 and walk a bit. It’s a lovely area to work – Tate Modern, Borough Market. Lots of great SE London areas with direct trains to London Bridge or Blackfriars; most people I know lived further out in their 20s so their money stretched further and they got a real neighbourhood.

I live there now and really like it but I’m now a 30something with a dog who likes walking in parks and painting - I would have hated it as new grad in my first job in London! Streatham I believe also has London Bridge trains and is a better bet for young people - also Brixton as you can change at Stockwell for the northern line.
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/08/2021 10:01

Will he be in the office every day or working remote some of the time?

I'd go so far as to suggest Crawley if office based part of the week. Direct rail into London Bridge in 30mins. Very very large town for building a life. 30mins down to Brighton etc.

He would get a 1bed apartment for 800 in a nice block.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 18/08/2021 10:04

Flat share in Bermondsey with likeminded twenty somethings half an hour’s walk from the office would be fun and would save money on commuting - by tube would cost a minimum of a thousand pounds a year and train from Croydon or wherever would be significantly more. It would also mean he wouldn’t be at the mercy of strikes, floods, or whatever afflicts the transport system next.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 18/08/2021 10:06

But Brixton/Clapham/Stockwell/Balham/Tooting also well worth a look. Lots of young City workers all the way down the Northern Line.

PinkDaffodil2 · 18/08/2021 10:07

Elephant and castle has some more affordable bits and he’d be able to walk or cycle to work which would save some money. We had a flat share down walworth road - lots of cheap food from East Street market!

Monkeysocks38 · 18/08/2021 10:09

I used to work in London Bridge and lived in Rotherhithe which had a good bus service into London Bridge (and sometimes I even walked it - was only around 2 miles so doesn't take long and I was doing it in heels!).

ApolloandDaphne · 18/08/2021 10:11

My DD works in an office which is on the Northern Line. She currently lives in Tooting in a house share but is moving to Balham soon with friends. This is her first job out of uni and it seems a lot of people like her live in this area. It seems to be relatively affordable. Look on Spare Room for rooms in house/flat shares.

54321nought · 18/08/2021 10:11

actually, the cost of commuting from Woolwich would be prohibitive - Greenwich would be better

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 18/08/2021 10:12

I live in Essex and walked to London Bridge in 10 minutes from Fenchurch Street when I used to work there.

Queenoftheashes · 18/08/2021 10:20

@TedMullins haha yes I did think that - I mean it’s great if you like strolling about the dinosaurs and some nice restaurants at the triangle but it’s prob a bit quiet for some!

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 18/08/2021 10:23

Moveflat.com is another good site for finding houseshares

JorisBonson · 18/08/2021 10:26

As PP have said, he'll be hard pressed to find something for £800 inc bills in a central-ish location. I agree he should look at the Southeastern train lines, a lot of them go into London bridge in less than 20 minutes.

MissKeithsNeice · 18/08/2021 10:30

I'd start by looking east as a way of being reasonably central- as PPs have said Rotherhithe/Bermondsey.

Its easy to get a caught up in the tube map but it can be quite limiting. If your ds doesn't mind half an hour of walking, id recommend looking at anything 1.5 miles south/east of LB. These places will all be really well served by buses.

Also take a look at the overground links from LB. Herne Hill, Peckham, Vauxhall, Crystal Palace, Denmark Hill are all connected to LB with decent, regular trains.

LB has lots of overground train links.

Jubilee Line north is all quite expensive til Kilburn.

eurochick · 18/08/2021 10:35

Very few people live very centrally - only the Americans and Continental Europeans in my circles! Most other junior folk live in places like Clapham, streatham, tooting, etc.
