Getting on the council list in London

My relative who is suffering from severity stress anxiety depression and physical condition is trying to apply to get on the council list and keeps getting refused.

She’s single and currently staying in a homeless hostel where she thought was a temporary accommodation but it looks like it’s a permanent accommodation for her.

The accommodation is affecting her health and the council refused to put her on the list and claimed her Temporary accommodation isn’t causing harm to her health which isn’t the truth.

She also suffers from schizophrenia she sees things and people that aren’t there and is scared of mentioning this to her mental health nurse and doctor. I told her to tell this to her doctor as this would help her get a treatment and also increase her chance of getting on the council list and maybe getting housed quicker ...

She said she gets treated badly by the hostel staff sometimes and is scared that if she mentioned schizophrenia that it would ruin her credibility in the future as this could be used against her does anyone has advise in on this topic?

As a single adult, she is not likely to get on the council list in London. Ever. Even if she did, she'd be waiting a decade-plus for something better than a hostel.

Her best bet would be to move out of London to an area where demand for council housing is much, much lower.

She was advised this when she posted earlier. There was lots of excellent practical advice given on that thread but she didn't want to hear that.

Is this the same single op that wanted to be housed in Westminster?

If so unfortunately you could be waiting years.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/02/2021 17:29

Thought this rang a bell-
Most sought after post code in the country I think it’s highly unlikely your relative will be successful

nimbuscloud · 10/02/2021 17:32

Your relative needs to take on board the advice that she was given when she posted this herself recently.

I think this is the 3rd time l have seen this up. Single adults still don’t get anywhere with council housing in London, however many time the question is asked

Charley50 · 10/02/2021 17:38

I know single adults with mental illness in London who have been given HA flats in the last year or two. Lewisham though, not Westminster. Try Southwark?

JorisBonson · 10/02/2021 17:44

Is this the same person that point blank refuses to leave Westminster, the most expensive borough in the country?

Wyntersdiary · 10/02/2021 17:46

Yeah I don't think she will be housed and if she's allowed on the list it would probably take years, not many 1 beds out there and they usually go to elderly, disabled and homeless but she isn't exactly homeless as she has a roof over her head and no kids

If you have no links to the borough, forget it. They'll bounce you back to Westminster or tell you to get out of London.

No London council has spare capacity or anything less than a decade-long list.

niceupthedance · 10/02/2021 18:17

Does she have a local connection to the borough? That's probably why she can't get on the register. She'll have to spend 3-5 years in the temp accommodation to get a local connection

heavenon · 10/02/2021 18:21

@niceupthedance she’s been in the borough for over 5 years she actually meets all the criteria

But while there's whole families of 4-5 living in bedsits and single parents housed in hostels there will be 0% chance.

Didn't someone say on the last thread that it was an 8-12 year wait?

A single person will never be housed over a family, sad as it is for the individual.

Why can they not move further out to a cheaper area? Even London outskirts will have a shorter wait, though it will likely still be years. At least then further out it would be cheaper housing and therefore easier to cover with benefits.

Respectabitch · 10/02/2021 20:06

Look, you your relative has been repeatedly told, both on here and by the council, that you they are not going to be accepted onto the list in the borough. It's a nonstarter. The flats do not exist, and if they did she'd be way down the priority list.

Her best option is to move out of London.

Moonstone1234 · 10/02/2021 20:08

Why London??

Purplerayhan · 10/02/2021 20:23

It's so worrying that this person will end up homeless. They are so fixated on the 'it's not fair aspect rather than make strategic plans for when they will have to.lwave the hostel.
