Young kids in London

Hi,

We are thinking about a family weekend in London (end of August)
However we will have a just about to turn 2 year old and a 6 month old!
Is it a good place for young kids? Reason I ask is the thought of getting busy tubes with a double buggy is scaring me!
We've been to London (pre kids) and LOVED it. Wanting some opinions on if it's a good place for really young kids or if we would be better thinking elsewhere, thanks! X

I actually think they're too young to get much out of it. I've lived here all my life and consider myself a die hard Londoner but I think it's not worth the trip at that age. Where else could you go? Others might disagree

A double buggy on tubes honestly sounds like my kind of hell... particularly assuming you'll be hitting the busy tourist areas. Not a fun idea imo.

we took our kids for a weekend in london a few months ago and every tube we got on there was no way a pushchair would have fit. i took my nearly 1 year old in a baby carrier and me and my boyfriend just took it in turns to carry her.

Can you use two umbrella style buggies or a buggy and a sling for the baby. Tube is ok between about 9:30 and 4 and on weekends but heaving between 7:30-9 and 5-7. Can you stay centrally and do a lot of walking?

doritosdip · 21/01/2020 14:50

I'd wait a couple of years until the older child is 4 and he can enjoy the experience more.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 21/01/2020 14:54

Don't take a double buggy. Sling the baby and use an umbrella buggy for the toddler. You should be OK taking the tube outside peak times, or use buses - millions of babies and toddlers manage everyday!

Although as PP say, what specifically did you want to do for/with them?

I think it's doable but I'm not sure it would be enjoyable. At the end of August, how about somewhere by the seaside?

prisscalledwanda · 21/01/2020 18:39

It is also likely to be very hot. London in the summer is normally not much fun - very humid, very hot, irritable hot Londoners, public transport (bus and tube) extremely uncomfortable. If your children don't do well in heat then I would stay away.

I agree with all the other posters. We live in London and love leaving in the summer for trips outside London! Definitely avoid the Natural History Museum and Science Museum as too busy. London Wetland Centre is nice but even that’s busy in the summer

I wouldn't bother at that age. Wait until they are older and understand what London is.
Go to the seaside.

Serenschintte · 10/03/2020 16:25

Sounds very stressful - speaking as someone who used to take toddler and baby up to London to see friends
At this age finding a stick or riding in a lift is as exciting as going to London. I remember asking my then 4 year old Ds what the favorite part of the (quite expensive) day out was and he said the ride in the lift!
If it were me I would take them to them to somewhere quiet near the seaside with nice walks for the weekend.

SapphosRock · 10/03/2020 16:32

I found it really tricky just with one DC in a buggy. You have to plan very carefully which tube stops to use as hardly any have lifts. If a lift is out of order at a tube station you're screwed.

I would wait until they can both walk.
