Are there any completely no go areas in London? And why?

Are these violent or extremely dangerous areas, full of gangs or what?

Avoid Kingston town centre in the run up to Christmas. Marks & Spencer in particular is like Night of the Living Dead.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 29/11/2018 22:58

The thing is: nowhere is a no go area to the people who live there. Its kind of a weird question.

I guess it means: are there any areas where the presence of a white middle class person would be unusual enough to immidiately mark them out as a target?

To which the answer is "No" There are no areas in London where that would be the case.

Watch the film Attack The Block. Then you'll understand LONDON!

GreenEggsHamandChips · 29/11/2018 23:43

Are you in a wheelchair? There's a few no go places then...

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 29/11/2018 23:53

There's places in London where I wouldn't get lost at night, lose any sense of what's going on around me and wave my phone around like a tourist. But that's true of any big city.

IamPickleRick · 30/11/2018 00:00

Tottenham is getting a little smarter.
Tottenham Hale is looking good but Seven Sisters high street... Hmm

I wouldn’t go to Edmonton Green. That’s probably it tbh. Plus the aforementioned steak houses and Garfunkels et al, obviously. That’s an unwritten rule.

Oxford street is fine on the weekends. I worked there for 5 years and I loved it!

Amaaboutthis · 30/11/2018 00:01

I’d avoid the tube exit from London Bridge station at about 8.45am. It’s not good

OhTheRoses · 30/11/2018 00:05

Have none of you been to Seven Sisters?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 30/11/2018 00:07

Garfunkels? They still have Garfunkel's in the London?

Fings ain't wot they used ter be.

IamPickleRick · 30/11/2018 00:10

Sorry, Shreks adventure. I forgot that one. The bastards robbed me blind, and it’s extremely dangerous for both your wallet and your patience.

Lisson grove

Have you been following the local news this week? I was always wary of the green anyway from muggings as a kid but it’s ramped up quite substantially recently. I would go to say, the BHP part of Edmonton and the cinema/Ikea etc but after what has happened now I’d rule it out from about Bury Street up to the north circ I think Confused

Dirtygirtyisthirty · 30/11/2018 00:28

Westfield Shepherds Bush is like the west end on acid-defo a no go area 😂

Seven Sisters is apparently impervious to the march of gentrification it has to be said, although I personally don't mind it. I'd probably think twice about walking around Homerton after dark mind you

BruegelTheEIder · 30/11/2018 00:29

There are also tons of uni students in Bow. I quite like the area actually. Nice and close to Vicky park too.

PP mentioned Brockley – I lived there a few years ago and it's not that bad. That kind of taxi driver would probably express shock at women walking around at 2am in almost any area, tbf.

And tbf, almost any area of London is more dangerous at 2am than at 2pm.

Kintan · 30/11/2018 07:52

Are you researching a piece for the Daily Mail OP? There are lots of places I wouldn’t wander around alone at night as a lone female, but that’s not London specific at all..

Davros · 30/11/2018 08:09

Wandering round a quiet, dark area that is unfamiliar is the issue but that's the same anywhere.

Vinorosso74 · 30/11/2018 08:11

Bank/Monument station. I'm sure lots of people go missing in there each day.

fuzzywuzzy · 30/11/2018 08:26

I used to live near seven sisters station, or it was the closest station to my house. And regularly used to come home late and was never worried about it. I was a teen at the time and in all the years I commuted thro the station and took a bus home from there I never felt threatened. Was accosted by a drunk once but I got off the bus a stop after her got on so wasn’t too bothered.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 30/11/2018 08:32

Yes to Lisson Grove. Even the police don’t go there apparently & nor do black cab drivers. It’s near a friends work so that M.D. how I know. They’ve been advised not to walk around there also.

evilharpy · 30/11/2018 08:37

I lived in East London for years. Can’t think of anywhere I wouldn’t go in terms of crime/violence. I used to go running on my own at night in Homerton aka Murder Mile. It’s very true that gang violence is unlikely to affect you if you’re not involved in it

Lots of areas were shitholes but I never felt unsafe.

MegBusset · 30/11/2018 08:41

I lived in Lisson Grove but that was 20 years ago! I grew up in S London and all the places that were considered no-go back then (Walworth Road / Deptford / Barrier Block estate in Brixton) are well out of my price range these days

IWouldPreferNotTo · 30/11/2018 08:57

Around Shadwell station is pretty grim. I commute to and from it each day and I've been followed up the road by a man screaming that I stole his phone; seen people smoking crack outside the station and just generally got the feeling that it's just not a particularly safe area.

Then again I lived in Kingston which is generally lovely and we had a stabbing a few roads up from where we lived and a murder in the town centre.

Undercoverbanana · 30/11/2018 09:04

Depends if you are a part of a rival gang.

LucheroTena · 30/11/2018 09:06

There are some tube stations and housing estates that I would avoid at night.
