Advice on journey time from R. Albert Hall to Liverpool Street

I am going to the Albert Hall on Sunday with my daughter, and I'm trying to gauge how long it will take for us (walking & tube) to get back to Liverpool Street Station to get our train back to Norwich. The concert is predicted to finish at 9.45pm, and our train leaves at 10.30pm. The online travel advice suggests a 15 min. walk followed by approx 30 min. tube journey. I am thinking we should leave the concert early, as really worried we'll get stuck. Do any of you seasoned commuters/tube travellers have any tips/think this journey time is pretty accurate?

I would build in at least 20 mins extra - the tube will be very busy with everyone leaving at the same time, and you never know if there will be delays.

Can you get a later train?

LighthouseSouth · 11/07/2018 13:38

I agree with the 20 mins extra for crowds walking

could you book a mini cab for that time, that way you can be picked up at the most sensible point. That said, if we win the football there will be road closures.... are you taking the Piccadilly to Holborn and then Central to Liverpool Street?

if you have a flexible ticket can you get a later train to Norwich?

Norfolkbumpkin · 11/07/2018 13:40

It's an advanced saver ticket, and only valid for that train. The walk is from the Albert Hall through Hyde Park to Lancaster Gate Tube Station. I'm thinking we could do a fairly brisk jog to get there!

ouff that's not a journey I'd want to risk in a hurry

Can you not stay over, and tootle back at your leisure on Sunday?? Even directly after breakfast if you do not want to malinger round London.

Is South Ken to Liverpool St on circle line quicker?

HoleyCoMoley · 11/07/2018 13:50

That's going to be pushing it, I'd be tempted to walk to South ken and get the tube, but that involves changing tubes which might end up taking as much time. I would leave a bit early, if it doesn't end till 9.45 you probably won't be out till 10. As it's a Sunday could you use your ticket on the later train.

AlexanderHamilton · 11/07/2018 13:53

At that time of day you will have to go the slightly longer route rather than through Kensington Gardens as the gates will be locked at 9.45pm.

Norfolkbumpkin · 11/07/2018 13:59

Just looked at the South Ken station, that might another option. The concert starts at 7pm, so I think the best option would be for us to leave before the end. I would hope the station staff would be sympathetic if we missed our train, my ds is only 10 so will be knackered by then. I feel a tad ashamed that I have made it to my mid forties with so little knowledge of travelling around the capital Blush

I also agree its going to take you at least 10-15 minutes to get out of the place too.

HoleyCoMoley · 11/07/2018 14:02

Yes, it's a quicker walk to South ken then you've got the choice of the direct circle line or the Piccadilly line with a change onto the central line at Holborn. What concert is it.

Norfolkbumpkin · 11/07/2018 14:05

The concert is Prom number 3, the Proms start on Friday. It's sold out too, so many, many people around.

HoleyCoMoley · 11/07/2018 14:10

You'll have a great time, there will be loads of people around plus everyone else, that's a very busy part of London. Could you stay overnight in a hotel and head back Monday.

HoleyCoMoley · 11/07/2018 14:13

Isn't it the world cup final on Sunday and also Wimbledon men's finalGrin

AlexanderHamilton · 11/07/2018 14:15

Young Musician isn't it? I've always wanted to go to the proms.

PrincessScarlett · 11/07/2018 14:21

The tube stations around Hyde Park are a nightmare after any event. On two occasions when I've been at Hyde Park the police cordon off the tube stations because of overcrowding and you can be held for half an hour before being allowed to continue your journey. I think you need to allow at least an hour.

Norfolkbumpkin · 11/07/2018 14:22

Oh god, I forgot about the tennis! OK, so maybe we'll leave the Hall at 9 Shock It is indeed the Young Musicians Anniversary Concert, hence taking my daughter for a treat. She has school the next day.................

Right, so South Ken is the best station, leave concert early, be prepared to walk. Thank you all for your advice. It's very much appreciated.

could you book a cab? At least once you are in it you aren't likely to get ravelled up in too much crowd control...any London cabby will be aware of road blocks and be able to drop you door to door as near as dammit

you are going to miss the whole thing if you have to leave too early and be clock watching the whole time.

I noticed I thought you were saturday into sunday, but it's Sunday into monday...I'd still travel back next day if at all possible, it's almost the end of term I can't see that a monday off school due to "unforseen circumstances" will hurt tbh.

No need to tell dd beforehand if you don't want her complicit in telling any lies, clean t shirt and pants and a sneakily booked hotel and just tell her it's a shame you missed the train! :o

ankasi · 13/07/2018 14:56

Be aware that on Sunday Paul Simon is playing in Hyde Park, so things around Hyde Park Corner/Park Lane will be a bit crazy, in case you decide on a taxi.

It will not affect you as much, but there is a festival in Gunnersbury, Kew the Music in Kew Gardens and Eminem playing in Twickenham, that latter two having a curfew of 10pm on a Sunday, IIRC.
It just means that the Tube could be super-busy on the way to the venue.

ThomasNightingale · 13/07/2018 15:11

Messy. In theory you should be fine but it might give you a nervous breakdown. I’d aim to leave your seats at 9:30pm, and yes, probably take the circle line from South Ken rather than getting the bus to Marble Arch if there’s a gig in Hyde Park.
