Relocating from London - culture towns

Hello :)

Bit of an open Question but I would appreciate suggestions for an alternative to London to move to. I’m lucky enough to work in a sector where I can pretty much relocate anywhere. However, I love London but I’m not saving, cannot afford a place, pollution is horrific etc. I’d like to try somewhere different. This is partly because I want to buy my own place.

I’m young (20s), single and I love culture - architecture, history, art, museums, galleries, theatre - the lot. This makes London a dream. I like spending my evenings going to a show, a film or a talk at a cultural institution - weekends and weeknights. I do however love my green space and countryside - Love national trust sites with their blend of culture and country. I’d pick a country(ish) cottage over a flat hands down. I’d be looking for a property around £300k.

If I relocate, I’d like to still be able to reach London in under 2 hours but perhaps have access to a nearer town/city that can offer the things I love day-to-day. Rail links are a must. I’m just wondering whether there are any alternatives to London with property that’s affordable.

St Albans, Oxford and Cambridge are perfect examples but property prices are insane. I’d be no better off. Any alternatives further out?

Thank you
X

Bristol sounds like it would tick all of your boxes.

TravellingFleet · 03/03/2018 23:09

Would Norwich work for you?
Or flip it on its head and go for Manchester, Leeds or Sheffield - all have a great blend of culture and access to countryside.

NorthernLurker · 03/03/2018 23:11

I would look at Manchester. Or York?

afromom · 03/03/2018 23:13

I thought Bristol too. Or Cheltenham? Although it depends what size of house you would want for £300k. You would certainly get more for your money in both of those places than London, but prices are still a bit steep.

Galaxyfarfaraway · 03/03/2018 23:14

Bath or Bristol.

Purplerain101 · 03/03/2018 23:15

What about Norwich? It’s 2 hours on the train to London and it’s such a beautiful city with loads of culture. The Norfolk countryside is great too, especially some of the seaside resort.
Around Bristol is good too as you are close to the Cotswolds, can get to London in 2 hours and the city centre has so much to see and do

LtGreggs · 03/03/2018 23:15

How flexible are you on the 2 hrs? Edinburgh or Glasgow??

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 03/03/2018 23:19

Liverpool gets my vote.
Lots of galeries and museums, great indépendant foodie scene, theatres and loads of lovely other towns a cities nearby to explore.

Canterbury area? On HS1 for London and pretty cultural, also easy access to Margate, Deal, Whitstable for the Turner and other galleries, there's also lots of small independent galleries scattered about. Gosh, even going over for a wander on Dungeness involves various arty offerings, some very talented artists live and exhibit from their homes. Photographic art is pretty popular here too. Some really interesting, offbeat museums around too.

LastAnni · 03/03/2018 23:31

Bristol. Without a doubt.

LockedOutOfMN · 03/03/2018 23:34

Leeds?

dantdmistedious · 03/03/2018 23:36

Bristol.

Elusiveone · 03/03/2018 23:43

Bristol for sure. I moved near Bristol from Essex on the borders with London and never regretted it. Been here 12 years and never would go back to Essex/ London

BloomersBerry · 03/03/2018 23:47

Liverpool sounds perfect for you. Tons of museums & galleries & a thriving independent art scene, great architecture & history plus plenty of theatres. It's close to beaches at Formby, Southport & on the Wirral Peninsula, beautiful countryside close by & under an hour to Manchester Chester & North Wales where there are more galleries, theatre, history & countryside.

JoJoSM2 · 11/03/2018 23:52

If you love London so much, wouldn't you prefer to just stay near it? E.g. move to Kent or Essex?

Sidney15 · 04/04/2018 19:28

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Bristol seems to be popular!
I’ve done a bit of research and York, Bristol and Liverpool seem to be pretty good fits. Love a cathedral city. I think Canterbury is a bit too small for me... I’m also not too keen on how isolated Norwich is from everything..

Brighton

twobarnsmammisonthebus · 04/04/2018 19:38

Don’t rule Norwich out, I think it would fit the bill perfectly! Well worth going for a weekend to visit and get a feel for the place.

I know this is an oldish thread, but I've lived in Norwich for the past 5 years and can say that, although it is lovely here, it is isolated. There is no easy way of getting anywhere. And Because of it's location, there is not much work here.

We're actually moving closer to London (Hertfordshire) because my dh has spent 2 years trying to get a job here with no success! There's not even been jobs to apply for, let alone get interviewed for...
