Hello!

Following on from another thread today about living in London I noticed lots of people very passionate about the place. That doesn't seem to happen with other towns or areas so I'm intrigued to find out for myself what all the fuss is about.

Where should we visit? What should we do? I know it's a big place but what would you recommend for first-timers?

Thanks Smile

Once you get hang of tube u will be fine but the bus is great especially with the lights.

Treat London as a series of villages, London is not.... Oxford Street. If on Oxford Street find St Christopher Place, wander up Marylebone High Street. Go to West Bourne Grove Portsbello Market.. As well as primrose hill, soho, China Town Covent Garden...

The children's play area in the maritime museum is free and excellent. The map there is good to.
However one of my absolute favourite museums for innovation and fun is the museum of London.
Each section is done in the different way, children find it fun and stimulating. It's also right by St Paul's, a lovely walk over bridge and your at tater modern, the wheel is further down and then Westminster, the globe its one of my favourite days out

Tower of London (eat at Coppa Club right next door - good value and service IMO), walk under Tower Bridge and visit St Katharine's Dock (Golden Jubilee Barge) lots of other boats, lots of eateries and pubs.

Tower Pier, Clipper to Greenwich, Cutty Sark etc

Museum of London and St Paul's

I went for the first time this summer - I’m 35!

I saw The Lion King, went to the Natural History Museum, did an open topped bus tour, saw all the sights, went to Regent Street and took my son to Hamleys - it was amazing, I loved it!

Going back with my mum next year to see Dreamgirls and I cannot wait.

So much fabulous information and advice on this thread.

I want to be able to refer to it when my grandson is a bit older.

I hope you have a wonderful time OP, there is nowhere like it.

I'm going to report my post and ask for the thread to be moved somewhere permanent.

I hope you don't mind, I think MNHQ will check with you first.

Hi all,

We're sending this very helpful thread over to the London topic for safekeeping.

For getting absolutely anywhere in London - use and download the app Citymapper. I've lived here my whole life and know it well, but still use it every day - even just to tell me how long it will take to get from x to y. It tells you the best mode of transport(s) to use, how long, if taxi or bus or tube is quicker etc and is honestly a lifesaver. Even my lifelong Londoner DP's are converts.

Bike ride through Hyde park. We went there last summer it was gorgeous. Make sure you stick to your side though. People in London get really pissed off. Especially joggers Grin

As a London jogger, this. But without the Grin.

Cyclists who stay on their bits, fine (and most of them seem to tbf).

Twats who whizz up silently out of nowhere & nearly knock me over deserve to hit a bump & fall off or run into a tree. Or both.
