Constant smell of burning is driving me mad

I had covid in August last year. Since Christmas I keep smelling burning when there is nothing burning. The last week or two it has really ramped up and in the evening/night it is constant. There are times it wakes me up and I panic that the house is on fire.
Ironically I frequently burn the dinner because I've lost about 75% of my sense of smell and I can't smell it burning.

It's driving me mad.

Has anyone suffered similarly and found anything to combat it?

I had this post Covid
On a daily basis in the first few months after I recovered I was running downstairs panicking thinking something was burning/ had left hob or oven on and there was nothing. DH thought it was funny but it wasn't really.
It took me a while to figure out what was happening
I can only say that it went away in its own in the end
I am not sure how long it lasted either because it was gradual when it went away. It just didn't happen for a few days and then only very occasionally and now it hasn't happened for ages
My best guess is that it was happening every day for 2 or 3 months and still happening occasionally for maybe 6 months.

Thanks for your reply. I woke my dp a few nights ago because I was convinced something was burning. It's still here this morning Sad I even put Toothpaste around my nose in the night to try and rid myself of it as mint I'd one of the few things I can smell.
Just so fed up of it now.

Are you or were you on any meds for the covid or other conditions?

I have allergies and chronic asthma. I've very poor sense of smell. Probably more like nothing 90% of the time, but occasionally something and I suffer a lot from phantom smells. Sometimes they're a precursor to a migraine, more often not.
They're usually burning smells or gas like smells.
I was once advised that it's either because then allergies are not well managed or because of damage as a result of the medication.
I too have to get others to smell things for me as I get panicked when I smell things as cannot trust it.
Make sure you have lots of ample detectors.

How's your taste?

Yes! This happened to me. Actually started about 2/3 months post covid and lasted a month or so. I could smell wood fires constantly. Really weird isn’t it?

I think it may have gone now but my sense of smell is still not as acute as it used to be, pre covid.

Not sure of your age op but it can be a perimenopause symptom. Also can signal sinus problems, I get this every few months for a few days and then it goes away. Incredibly annoying!

I get this every so often for a few days at a time and have definitely never had Covid (am on a vaccine trial with frequent pcr tests and antibody tests). Drives me to distraction when I have it!

You may have Covid again. If not, and per that page, contact your GP.
