The effect school closures in lockdown have had on children in key stage 1

Hello fellow mums!

My name is Shianne Hawkins and I am a student at the University of Bristol studying MSc Neuroscience and Education. I am currently doing my dissertation and am just looking for any mums who are willing to spare 10 minutes (maybe less) to complete a quick survey for me!

PARENTS OF CHILDREN IN: RECEPTION, YEAR 1 AND YEAR 2 PLEASE

I am investigating the effect that the lockdowns and school closures have had on children in keystage 1 (reception, year 1 and year 2) in terms of their academic, emotional and social development. I am focusing particularly on the most recent lockdown of 2021.
The survey has been ethically approved and all responses are anonymous.

the survey features 25 questions (mostly multiple choice) with 4 open questions to discuss your views in more details. There are no right or wrong answers! (further information on the survey link below).

Any support with my research is greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your time! :D

I will do this tomorrow if that's ok.

CauliflowerCheese30 · 22/07/2021 23:05

Actually, all done!!

LouLou198 · 22/07/2021 23:19

Done! I would be very interested in the outcome of your research. It's been a difficult time for my 5 year old.

@CauliflowerCheese30

Thank you so much for your support!

@LouLou198

of course! I can post a summary of findings on this thread after the dissertation process is complete. It is due in September, so there should be a summary uploaded here by October. Thank you so much for your support with my research! :)

Done.

For the questions on workload from the schools it would have been good to say what you actually got done. The school work we got sent was appropriate and she could do it in a day, but we couldn't do it with her due to work. Also asking about whether they attended key worker provision would have given more of a picture of what lockdown learning and progress was actually like within out household. Best of luck with your research.

@Rolypolybabies

Thank you for completing the survey! much appreciated.

Those are some very interesting points that I did not consider. Thank you for your suggestions! I will certainly consider these ideas in my future research ideas section.

Thank you :)

Done.

Some of the questions I had to choose the answer that fitted a bit but not totally. I.e. do I think that she's made improvements in maths since returning. I had to choose the 2nd answer but the reality is that she hasn't progressed as much as she should have abs that's not because she has struggled to return. It's due to the level that they are having to teach due to children being at risk of being left behind.

Agree with the above post that the answers may be highly influenced by factors such as - whether a child was a key worker child and actually attended school

  • how much progress they were making BEFORE lockdown (you ask about during and after)
  • whether an adult was supervising the child or having to do their own work and largely leaving the child to try and do it themselves.
  • whether the adult at home was supposed to be doing the teaching (with resources provided by the school) or whether the lessons were delivered by the teacher - and if lessons were live or pre recorded.
  • whether the child is at a private or state school

Best of luck - a v interesting topic!

Thank you for your suggestions! This is my first time conducting research like this so it is really helpful that you are providing me with interesting considerations that I missed. All these ideas will be included in my future research/discussions section where I can critique my research and offer improvements if I were to conduct similar research again.

Thank you for your time and support! I really appreciate it :)

I have completed it. However I think it didnt address some of the real difficulties experienced in home educating children of this age: the demand on parental time (children of this age can’t work independently for long, especially on glitchy videos with technical problems such as teachers not uploading videos properly, recordings garbled, work not saving etc!). They also get bored and fidgety when expected to sit still for a long time, can’t follow complex written instructions when they have only just started learning to read etc.

My daughter’s progress had more to do with additional effort made by me outside the school’s programme. Also the school repeated all the lockdown work on return so the children got even further behind!

ShiHawkins · 30/07/2021 17:27

@MGMidget thank for your time! and thanks for the input :) this is all very helpful to me to consider.

Just to note.. i will be aiming to close the survey at midnight tomorrow (01/08/21), as August i intend to analyse data and begin writing up my findings.

Thank you for everyone who has taken the time to complete it, and for those who have given me helpful considerations! :D
