Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to post this but thought I’d give it a go. My son was doing his maths today at home and this was one of the questions. For part a, he put 10 in each box which seems to be correct. For part b he wrote, 3x2x5 = 6x5 = 30. His teacher has asked him to look at part b again. I know it doesn’t really matter but it’s bugging me now. What is the correct answer? Anyone have a clue? Am I just being stupid??

That's what I would have put!

Findahouse21 · 19/01/2021 20:29

3x2x5 is the sum of the top answers so 30 then multiplied by 5 again is 150

Howmanysleepsnow · 19/01/2021 20:29

No, he’s right!

Howmanysleepsnow · 19/01/2021 20:31

@Findahouse21, yes, but we’ve been doing these work sheets. It’s not a new equation, it’s a simplification of the first iyswim.
The example equations show it that way.

Howmanysleepsnow · 19/01/2021 20:32

Fwiw DS got it right with the same answer.

sallyjuliet · 19/01/2021 20:33

My husband initially thought it should be 30x5 = 150 but when he looked again, he agreed with my son. I’m wondering if the teacher has just mis read it a bit. They’re so busy so I’m not blaming them. Just puzzling me :)

I don't understand how 3x2x5 can be anything other than 30 @howmanysleepsnow

chuffincold · 19/01/2021 20:33

Where did he get 6x5 from for the middle section of part B?
2x5 =10 done in part A 3 times.
3 times 2x5 =30
30x5 =150

sallyjuliet · 19/01/2021 20:34

@Howmanysleepsnow thank you :)

I think it’s supposed to be the beginnings of algebra maybe? Showing them that the same sum can be written in different ways so 3x2x5 is the same as 6x5 which is the same as 30?

OP posts:
TheCap · 19/01/2021 20:37

The final sum is 30x5 surely?

Findahouse21 · 19/01/2021 20:39

Ah, I see your point. Very confusing way to set it out though

Definitely both answers would be correct mathematically speaking

sallyjuliet · 19/01/2021 20:41

I feel sad that I got an a* for gcse maths, did a medical degree but now don’t understand year 4 maths! Hmm

I think the teacher maybe read the box as a mathematical full stop, so
3x2x5=30. And then 30 (in the box) x5 =150.

But I reckon your son got the right answer here, because those counters don't illustrate getting to 150, they show 30.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 19/01/2021 20:47

I've just asked my yr4 Son, he said 150

sallyjuliet · 19/01/2021 20:47

@AnnaBronskisSkirts yep that’s what I thought about the counters. Makes more sense for it to be 30 because that’s how many counters there are. Ah well :)

First box 30
Second box 150

hauntedvagina · 19/01/2021 20:55

This is the answer from White Rose, your son was correct.

Thank you as im never sure how closely teacher checks - if they can even read my photos!

Lelly78 · 20/01/2021 22:40

I'm glad he's correct, you can't do
325 = .... Then X by something else in the same number sentence, all the bits need to equal each other (IYSWIM 😆)
