Maths help needed where do I turn
Chaotic45 · 03/06/2020 12:21
My Y8 son is really struggling with maths. His teacher has been hacking home learning by sending videos to watch and then questions to do.
This week in particular the videos have not covered what is required and my son is struggling. I'm trying to help, but am ashamed to say I'm struggling too.
The teacher hasn't offered further help. Can anyone help with the two attached maths questions, or suggest anywhere i could go for help? There are so many videos available online but I'm struggling to find any that cover this type of problem.
The system he is using shows the answers as you can see, but it doesn't give any workings so we can't see how they should be tackled.
I appreciate he needs proper help and that will maybe be given when he returns but for now it would be so helpful to get a steer on how to do these!

I've looked at this, and it would seem my O level maths hasn't prepared brain for it. I'm commenting to sympathise, and this will bump this hopefully for someone with a more mathematical brain. Just a thought, can you fill in the 'feedback to teacher' part?

Sorry really difficult to explain in this format. For the equation, multiply both sides by x+4. Then you have 3x+1=5x+20. Take 3x from both sides. So 1= 2x+20. Take twenty from both sides so -19= 2x. Then divide each side by 2. So -19/2=x

For the triangle, the important information is that the side AB is the same (length) as side AC. As it says AB=AC. Therefore 5w = 3w+3. Take 3w from both sides and you have 2w=3. So w =1.5. Therefore AB=5w=7.5. AC=3w+3=4.5+3=7.5.
BC=w+6=1.5+6=7.5.
Hope that helps

Wow mumsnet thank you so so much. That's really helpful. I need to try to find some videos or help guides that would have helped DS (or me) to teach that answer by ourselves. Any ideas?
Thank you again!

Khan academy is really good. You can access little tutorials that explain things really well. It's free.

Try working through these if you still need examples:

There is an app called Photomath - it will give you the right answer but then also explain all the different ways to get to the answer. I swear by it! It can also read written questions.

It is all about reading and understanding the question to get the starting point 5w = 3w + 3, after that it should be simple to work out.
