When your child REALLY hates writing. What do you do?

He has always been behind with his writing ability but actually he is now not bad at all. His pen grip is good, he’s writing is just about legible. Spelling acceptable. But my god he HATES it.

I decided to leave that side of things totally to school and just do extra maths etc at home. But of course covid19 appeared and now I’m doing it all.

Has anyone got any tips to help me motivate him? Currently he earns the iPad and his favourite game on the iPad by completing his school work first. We do some writing each day but not a great amount. Maybe five sentences one day, less another, the most he has written at home is 11 short sentences as part of his diary journal the school has asked all the children to complete.

Is there anything more I can do or shall I just continue to push through the ridiculous tantrums?

Individual sentences is fine.
Sometimes good to structure his writing like 'write 5 sentences. First must include the word because, second is 3 words, 3rd is a question etc.
Just gives reluctant writers something to focus on and an end point.
Also try making it fun by writing in fun places e.g. under the table with paper stuck to the bottom, write in chalk on the pavement.
Get him to send text messages to your mum, write you a note if he wants a snack rather than asking verbally...
And read read read. Reading is the secret to great writing.

I'd book him in to see an Occupational Therapist. Could be underlying reasons why he dislikes it so much, such as muscle strength, motor control, sensory difficulties etc. Best of luck

Are you a keyworker? My DS was the same and I would have sent him to school as long as they were supervising work. He stopped writing voluntarily at five, homework with any writing was a constant battle. Oh, and he's always been an avid reader.
