Hi there

Im moving to Hove soon, and will be having my first midwife appointment in July, where I need to say which hospital I want to have my baby at. I have no clue of any of the hospitals in the area, can anyone advise please...

thanks

Hi Catherine

hmm cant help really but we moved here three weeks ago and I am also pregnant - maybe we can have coffee ? I am deciding between The Sussex in Brighton and The Princess Royal in Haywards Heath ....

will watch with interest to see what people say ...

I had both children in the royal sussex, they were both c-sections (1st was emergency, 2nd was planned) although neither was straightforward this had nothing to do with the staff there and their support. Everyone we met was really nice, and very helpful. As far as hospitals go I'd say it was a nice environment to have a baby in. I used the pool too, which was great (don't know if they have one in HH?). I was quite poorly after having DS and was given my own room, it was a very basic room - only had a bed and a sink, but at least I didn't have to listen to everyone else on the ward! One of the things I loved about having my children here was the great view you get of Brighton from the labour ward which is on the 13th floor (or poss 12th...I forget which!)

i've heard nothing but good stories about the royal sussex lately

good and bad about HH, they can be a bit overcautious i think (refused point blank to a vaginal breech delivery for example)

they do have a pool btw!

worthing is supposed to be very good

or you could have a homebirth!

I had my DS at Sussex 5 yrs ago - wasn't great, but sounds like things have dramatically improved (and the views are distracting!) - it's very big though. And very busy . I had my DD in Worthing 2.5yrs ago and that was bliss. Small, intimate and amazing staff. couldn't praise them enough. Good luck with wherever you go - and worth remembering that if there are any complications you'll probably end up at the sussex anyway!!

Had both of my children at Brighton and nothing but a pleasant experience!

I had Ds in the Royal Sussex almost 9 years ago and it wasn't great. A friend of mine had a really bad experience there too. However this was a long time ago and things may well have changed now (I don't live in Brighton anymore). From the friends who have had babies recently down there I have heard really good things about the Princess Royal in Haywards Heath.

Thanks everyone..gosh, Im no wiser now! The thoughts of a seaview is bizarely alluring, and the intimacy of a small hospital also appeals at Worthing.. Hmm..! :-)

Or you could consider Crowborough birthing centre, which is where I am going? Its a bit of a drive but seems really lovely, a good compromise between a home and hospital birth. You have to be low risk and will be transferred if there are any complications. Having had a few ante natal appts there I feel really happy about the care, ambience, facilities and philosophy but it may not suit you if you want a hospital/medical birth or have some risk factors.
Good luck!

Had all three of mine at Royal Sussex - very happy. First birth a bit difficult, labour went on, ventouse delivery - others straightforward (quick/birthing pool). With the second birth the community midwife I had been seeing attended - she had been rotated into hospital - great. Top tip - if you are staying in ask for an "amenity room" if they have one available - this is a single room you can pay for. It's about £30 a night but I was never charged. It's worth it not to be woken up by everyone else's babies and lights.

JugglingMama · 22/07/2010 22:32

thanks all..have signed up with a lovely community midwife at wish park surgery and for worthing hospital. let's see what happens, my first born arrived within 4 hours start to finish so im scared of getting stuck in traffic, and a small place seems like it might be nice..hope for the best anyway!

Hi Catherine ...

I'm headed for Worthing too ..as long as pregnancy stays uncomplicated ( have quite a history)

Very jealous of such a quick labour - must have been quite scary though .. My sil 's first was a three hour labour - her second was 50 minutes from first contraction to birth ...!
So don't hang around when the time comes

Email me or cat me when you arrive if you fancy a coffee...

I had DS at PRH 4 years ago - it wasn't fantastic care by any means, but as DS was in SCBU the circs weren't quite normal.
If you are thinking about it, you need to know that there is no proper peadiactric cover, and so they are very limited on what they can do in terms of care.
On the upside, parking is OK, wheras it is appalling at Brighton

mamasmissionimpossible · 02/08/2010 22:11

I had dd at RSCH. There was some complications with the birth, so I had to stay in for some time. However, it did give me some time to find out about the place! Overall, I was happy with the care both me and dd received. I had heard lots of horror stories from other people, but luckily none of it happened to me. I would recommend the RSCH.

I have also given birth in Worthing Hospital, which was also good.

JackJacksmummy · 02/08/2010 23:08

Hiya

I had both of my sons at RSCH and cannot fault antenatal and labour wards, the midvives i had with both births were so friendly and build a real rapport with mums.

Post natal was not so good, the midwives generally sat at their desks and left you to it.

Special care unit is fantastic!

so10 · 03/08/2010 21:56

Hi there!

I had both my children at RSCH, the midwives were amazing, I can't fault the service really but I have heard good and bad stories about this hospital. Worthing is supposed to be great.

Sorry, this probably doesn't help make up your mind cos its what others have said too!

Good luck!

SirBoobAlot · 09/08/2010 21:28

I had DS at PRH in November, they were amazing. Its a smaller hospital, so they didn't seem so rushed or over booked, which they did at RSCH. Would definitely go there again if I had another child.

Parking is better at PRH - but there is better emergency care at RSCH should something go wrong. There are pools at both hospitals.
