Gloucester Road area / bishopston

Hi, Anyone know this area well? Which are the nicest roads in Bishopston? Would it be noisy living a couple of hundred metres off the Gloucester Rd, down at the bottom near those pubs hobgoblin/prom etc? I only know the area by day, but concerned it could be a bit rowdy at night?

Hi bathtime I live a bit further up Glos Rd, but lived down that end when young, free and single. The amazing thing about most of the area is that walk a road away from Glos Rd and all is quiet. It is a studenty area, yes, but pretty diluted by families. You might get a bit of noise at pub kicking out time occasionally, but it's usually people just walking home.

I'd say down that end of the road Belmont Rd is lovely,as is anywhere looking over the park or around the cricket ground. Bit pricey down that end mind, I'm in the cheaper bit up the road . I live up by the Ashley Down Rd junction, just one road back from Gloucester Rd, and in our garden you can hardly even hear the traffic, although we have got two takeaways backing onto us, so the waft of fried chicken and curry from the back of their shops every evening gets a bit annoying.

Around the cricket ground is definitely the nicest bit, also by St Andrews park. We are moving to Bishopston in September and I am really looking forward to being able to go shopping in all the local shops rather than the mad supermarket dash.

bathtime · 28/06/2010 11:31

oh good to hear nice things! I was actually thinking of the roads off to the left of glos rd, quite far down towards Zetland etc. What do you reckon to that bit? I really liked St Andrews park, for some reason I'd only ever driven round the perimeter which doesn't give an idea of how nice it is inside. Lovely! And I do like lots of the little shops on the road down at that end (don't know it further up). We had been thinking of redland, but I'm thinking that this area might actually have a nicer community feel?
thanks for sharing your views!

A lot of people like the roads a bit further up, around Egerton Brow and the like.

I've looked at property closer to where you're suggesting and personally I've found it less family friendly and also find further up Glos Road more useful for shopping and facilities. I like around Nevil Road (up by Sainsburys Local and Somefield). I live at the top of Glos Road by the junction with Muller Avenue.

The crunch comes with schools. Do you have DCs? Secondary schools are the big issue. Where I am the secondary default is Fairfield or Orchard, neither of which I particularly rate. Down your end I think you'd be Cotham and Colstons which had some threads about them recently.

Hey bratnav, where you moving to? Who knows, we might be able to have coffee on Glos Road instead of trekking into town (Riven will obviously have to get more buses, I'm sure she won't mind ).

I currently live in Redland, on one of the roads between Kensington Rd and Chandos Rd. We have amazing neighbours, we close the road for pancake day races, annual sunflower growing competitions etc, really friendly and a lovely community feel BUT this is the best time of year when all the students bugger off! About 60/40 student/family split round here. Mostly it's fine, but they have NO consideration and they all have a car, so 4-5 cars per household, I frequently have to park in the next street which isn't fun with 4 DCs and a boot full of shopping. Basically lots of pluses and minuses. The other one is the cost of living here. Much higher than Bishopston.

Agree with Queenie, the schools issue is a nightmare, particularly primary places, but that is true for both Redland/Cotham and Bishopston.

Queenie, We're moving to the road with the large primary school on it, has 'Sage' shop on the corner

Thanks for all this local info!
bratnav - good luck with the move to bsishopston
We really love Redland but (apart from the prices!) were a bit worried about there being loads of students. I think bishopston has a nice feel in any case - maybe not quite so leafy though? Glos rd a bit less smart than whiteladies, but it does have a nice down to earth feel.
I'll keep looking for now!

Apart from the sainsburys in clifton down the shopping (food) is way better on Glos Rd. I am so excited about moving there

Mookymoo · 03/07/2010 19:30

I was just going to say I used to live off Bishop rd, and it's lovely but it sounds like that's where you're going to be! The Christmas fayre at the school on Bishop Road is really good, it's really quiet around there but you're still really close to everything. Best of luck!

Ripeberry · 03/07/2010 19:35

My FIL lives in Monk road, just off Bishop road. Nice up there, but nightmare for parking anywhere in that area.
Everything in walking distance, but don't have a car as there are quite a few vandals around that area

Parking can't be any worse than it is here...

8rubberduckies · 04/07/2010 21:09

I've had my car scraped for the second time in one week tonight!

bathtime · 05/07/2010 00:10

really sorry to hear that! how totally annoying and pointless!!

Someone said to me when I got my new (to me) car that if you're living in Bristol and get a new car, you're better off just taking a rake to the side of it. At least you know who did it! and too true, 3 days later someone had run into it overnight causing £300 worth of damage (obviously no details left) and since getting that repaired small scratches and dinks have appeared randomly.

bathtime · 05/07/2010 09:20

Is it vandals or are the cars scraped by other cars because the roads are sooo narrow?

By the way, I was down there on Friday night and could hear loud music from Planatation bar from quite a distance away. Is that normal / something people complain about?

OP posts:
8rubberduckies · 05/07/2010 20:58

It is not vandals, just really narrow roads. Moving to a much wider road this Friday, yay!

Don't know about noise from Plantation, it's a restaurant usually, maybe it was a private function. I think at the end of the day Glos Rd is busy, cosmopolitan and lively, so you're sometimes going to get a bit of noise, but I can honestly say it's not ever bothered us noticeably once you're away from the main road.

QueenofWhatever · 05/07/2010 21:00

bathtime, more likely it was because it was St Paul's carnival this weekend.

Mookymoo · 06/07/2010 09:22

Yup defo St Paul's carnival. Was so loud on Sat night we could hear it and we live the Eastville side of Muller Rd

bathtime · 06/07/2010 09:47

aha! that could be it. It was actually only noisy because they had their doors open. I can live with special occasion party noise!! It would just get you down if it was every Fri and Sat.

So it's narrow road scrape-ages! I must admit I am terrified driving down some of the roads, I don't know how people park on them and I dread someone coming the other way as my reversing skills are poor - I only seem to be able to do it in a wavy line!

I used t live down the bottom of Gloucester Road and loved it, although I was St Andrews and not Bishopston. I now live further up near the cricket ground. It's pretty idyllic aside from the small garden.

Zetland road end there are lots of nice schools and even a decent secondary school!!

8rubberduckies · 07/07/2010 22:06

bathtime I couldn't park for toffee before I moved here and now I'm approaching a normal level of parking skills for a grown up . It's good practice...

Spo · 22/07/2010 13:20

I have lived on North Road (Arches end) for 10 years and now have a 2 year old. It's very convenient. I don't have a car, as husband took it when he left, but it did get scratched alot, and quite often no where to park, and I can get around without it anyway as everything is so near. As someone else said, you do get the odd drunken revellers walking homeat 4am, but the music from the bars seems to stop about 11pm. Love how close the shops and the park is, buses to most places, and lovely nursery 2mins away.
