Cost of Childcare in Richmond?

Hi All
I've just found this Richmond-specific threat and wonder if anyone can help. I've just found out I'm pregnant (due in Jan) and confused about cost of childcare in the area.

There's no prices on the nursery websites and its too early for me to visit (bad luck!). I'm not sure how much more a nanny could cost and it might be better for us to have this option but again not sure of prices. Please could someone advise:

  1. Daily cost of looking after baby from 6months from 8am-6pm
  2. Cost of nanny for these times?

Thanks so much!

Hi Lulabel - congratulations!

You might have more luck if you repost this on the childcare section of the main talk site but fwiw I'm paying £66 a day for a nursery place in Twickenham. Kids Academy (by Pools on the Park) is a bit cheaper. Rates also often vary depending on how many days a week you work.

Nanny costs are a bit complicated as they generally quote a net rate which you then have to gross up (you can find nanny tax calculators online to help with this). I get the impression the going rate round here is about £9/£10 an hour though. Entering into a share with another family (see eg www.nannyshare.co.uk) can work out cheaper but is often more complicated as you have two sets of families' needs (and holidays etc!) to consider.

NB that £9/£10 an hour is a net rate btw

hi i am a childminder and i charge 65 a day for those hours as do many cms in the area

Lulabel27 · 28/06/2010 22:22

Hi Ktay and mummyquilliam thank you for your replies! I've just had a look at Pools on the Park and its £60 per day and that's quite handy as its near the station and they have good times so I can do a full day at work.

It all seems a bit of a minefield and quite scary as I've got to start to put away some money to help with £1200 pcm of fees!

Mummyquilliam - whats the difference between a nanny and a childminder? Sorry for the silly question...

i work form my home a nanny would come to yours i am happy to offer what a nanny does in your own home. Also you would have to pay a nanny's tax and ni where as i have to pay my own as i am self employed hth

Lulabel27 · 01/07/2010 17:57

aah I see ok that makes sense! So I would drop the baby off at yours (the childminders) house and pick up from there at 6pm for a fixed price?

What age do you look after from?

Thanks for your help!

thats right from as young as you want if you decided when lo was3 months to go back to work then i would have lo. I also do extended hours so would do 7-7 for £6.50 for the extra hours as i know a lot of local parents have to get to london and back and can get caught in meetings where as a nursery will only do the 8-6 hours

Wow that sounds great - please could message me your contact details? I know its very early days and I'm only 3 months pregnant but this solution sounds much more flexible and appropriate for us.

Thanks for all your advice too.

lol, nurseries never put their prices on because they are expensive!

My kids go to the Kew Day Nursery (Asquith) which is open 7.30am to 6.30pm and I think charges around £75 per day. We have been very happy with it.
