Hi

I've just had a bit of a nightmare with my 7 year old DD, she suffers with IBS & is, VERY intolerant to chemical additives, artificial colours, benzoate preservatives & artificial sweetners, they affect her stomach & the colours her Skin badly.

Well having been given antibiotics last week for Tonsilitis, I find out our fantastic usual Chemist (Steven Bower) has retired, he always mixed up a special preparation for her, without all the additives,

Due to the Tonsiliits not been picked up on quickly, last week I had no choice but to take all Boots could offer, FULL of 3 colours, 2 sweetners & the dreaded Sodium Benzoate & keep my fingers crossed that her reaction wouldn't be too bad, as she needed the drugs & no-one, GP included could tell me where I could get an alternative & she needed the anti B's

After a call to out of hours Drs on Friday evening, as she was reacting badly, doubled over with Stomach pain & very bad diarea, generally in a real bad way, I ended up been told to take her to A&E immediately with a suspected Appendicitis

Thankfully it wasn't that, but thanks to the damned rubbish in the drugs , as if anti b's on there own aren't bad enough on the stomach .....she was diagnosed with Colitis, & taken off the Anti B's immediately, the A&E Dr saying she thought she didn't need them as it looked more like a Virus to her, spots in wrong place apparently, though she did admit that the red spots may of already cleared from the tonsils

I was relieved to stop the drugs, BUT was told to keep an eye on her, just incase it had been Tonsilitis...& now her throat is looking bad again & she is still generally unwell, still struggling with food too s her stomach is still inflamed, though thankfully eating a little bit & I'm keeping up with things like fresh ginger & Manuka honey, & spirulina to try & do what I can for her naturally

I'm worried that if she does need antibiotics again, we'll be back to square 1,

Does anyone know of a propper old style Chemist who can mix up their own additive free Childrens Medicines, as I need to be prepared, even the Hospital couldn't help

so bloody annoying, I mean the food companies are learning, & lets face it, its not exactly rare to be intolerant to this stuff , so why can't the drug companies get their act together.............but In the mean time I need to find someone as good as Steven Bower was

Thank You

Wherabouts do you live? Though i guess with your daughter it doesn't really matter.

I know the chemist on Elm Grove is good but i honestly don't know if he can mix up a good potion - he's just always been friendly and helpful. Sorry I don't know his name but i think it might be Colin.

Thanks for your reply Beaksnees,

We are not too far from there, but as I struggled to get info from anywhere, even the School Nurse commented that none of the NHS speaks to each other, all just passed me on to someone else & couldn't answer.........

so I've ended up walking around & asking quite a few chemist over the last few weeks & finally found out how it all works, bit of an eye opener, & bloody daft really, but turns out our old chemist "officially" shouldn't of been mixing anything up for her at all, despite the fact it was a Godsend, & our GP knew all about it & approved,

from what I've been told by another old fashioned chemist who used to mix up their own, & had it confirmed by others, its changed & it ALL now has to be sent off to a specialist place for mixing up ......

the GP has to request this on the prescription..... & turns out that GPs like ours not knowing that..... is not uncommon........if the prescription is put in before 12 on 1 day, they will have your drugs back by the next day........not brilliant, as I'm sure most of us would prefer to be able to start treatment as soon as diagnosed, but something at least

Thankfully we managed this time without needing more anti B's, though turned out Dds problems were caused by a virus & a bad hidden tooth infection, that flared up a few days later into a huge abscess, burst & kept flaring back up again, though our dentist was keen not to give her more anti'Bs unless she couldn't cope..... thankfully she managed & had the tooth removed & drained yesterday....fingers X'd thats the end of it all.... but at least I know what to do for any future infections

Colin the chemist in elm grove is the best
he really knows his stuff, he has given me so much advice(I go to him before the doctor)
he has a real understanding of medicine.
dd has CP and he is the only chemist who understood it iynwim

thanks 2 shoes, I think I might pay him a visit & ask him if he can mix up additive free meds anyway, as it would be much easier all round if he can........he sounds a lot like our old Chemist Steven was.... I often found him more help than our GP too,

thanks again, both of you
