Richmond Day Nursery - anyone know it?

JustAnotherManicMummy · 03/05/2010 15:22

I was wondering if anyone has used Richmond Day Nursery in the grounds of Marshgate Primary school?

I'm looking to send my one year old for a couple of mornings/day a week.

All views very welcome.

TIA

hi sorry don't know about Marshgate nursery
maybe ask chat here

I only know about Asquith and a couple of local Montessori (Kew) will ask around

JustAnotherManicMummy · 05/05/2010 14:36

Thanks sfxmum

I am a little wary of blundering onto that thread and pitching up with an unrelated question when you're all deep in conversation

trust me nobody minds, I did just that about 4yrs ago and people come and go at will
besides there is always the advantage of meet ups with or without children and general west London Gossip

AlmostKewmum · 05/05/2010 15:01

I've looked round it - like all nurseries what suits some, doesn't suit others.

Some friends send their kids there and they're quite pleased with it but it felt quite 'business-like' for me. Have you looked at Montys in Kew or the Kings Road nursery in Richmond? Both have good reputations - I really liked Montys when my DC was little.

pbills · 05/05/2010 22:36

Hi sfxmum,

Can you let me know what you know about the Montessori Nurseries in Kew??

Tks x

Kewcumber · 05/05/2010 23:23

JAMM - I haven't heard anything about the Marshgate nursery though the school is very well thought of. I know someone who's FS will be going to the school in Sept but he is at Darrell nursery.

Best nursery in Richmond area if the Wyndham one but as its the only free state run nursery is virtually impossible to get into though I gather theyhave now moved to admission on the basisi of distance (vs age which they used before).

pbills - sfx knows mostly what I have told her about Montessori nursery and thats the one in St Lukes Sadnycombe road which I think I have already mentioned on anotehr thread. Strangeky in all rthe time I have lived here I have never met anyone whose child has gone to the montessori studio. The Barn Nursery in Kew also used to have a good reputation but don;t know anyone who has gone in the last couple of years.

Thank you to all you lovely ladies for taking the time to post.

DS is too little for Montessori and Wyndham but good to know about for the future. I've got him on the waiting list for Scallywags (formally Scamps) to give me a break but I'm hoping to go back to post grad studies in September so need him in nursery 3 days a week.

Have decided against childminder now he's bigger. He needs the socialisation and sand pit activities rather than lots of love and cuddles which I can provide at home.

I've seen Grena Road and didn't like it but it was the baby room that put me off and DS is too old now.

Richmond day nursery is Asquith and I'm going to see the one in Kew too - although I've heard mixed things about it.

I haven't seen Montys or Kings Road so will give them a call and go along to see. A friend who visited said Montys was very cramped.

Many thanks everyone

thought KewC could answer that better
regarding Asquith Kew , dd went there a couple of mornings a week from when she was 3, she is a June birthday so was only there a year, had her birthday been different and had she been there for longer I would have preferred Wyndham always did anyway but hard to get in

Asquith is not bad and some people love it, having had children there from babies but it has ups and downs the pre school room I don't think is great, have to say food is good

in the end it is personal preference

Kewcumber · 06/05/2010 09:18

yes as a pre-school option Asquith isn't the best though not bad - more like a play group than a preschool. Having said that DS really enjoys it for the time he spends there.

Wyndham will only tke for the year before school but I htink Montessori will take from 2.5 so depends how old your DS is. Montessori in Sandycombe road will let them do part time in the afternoons if you don;t want him to go full time yet. But not really suitable if you need full time care in order to work as max they can do is 9.10am - 3pm and I think that owuld be a bit full on for a younger child vs a day nursery. I think Asquith seems fine as a day nursery.

AlmostKewmum · 06/05/2010 09:50

The Studio in Sandycombe Rd is also owned by Broomfield House school - useful if you're thinking of going private as I think you can feed in - but actually I don't know anyone who's gone there in recent years either. The Barn still seems quite popular though.

Montys is much smaller than the bigger nurseries and is based in a house so I can see why it might have seemed cramped - but there are only 6 children in each of the four rooms, the staff are lovely and the food is great! I'll hopefully send DC2 there later this year. It's also recently opened a preschool nursery on Marksbury Avenue which is also good by all accounts (I think it's being managed by a former Windham teacher!) But it all depends on what you're looking for - I've heard great and not great things about Grena Road too. Good luck!

Kewcumber · 06/05/2010 10:19

I didn't know both Montessori's were owned by Broomfield! Well live and learn...

AlmostKewmum · 06/05/2010 10:22

I hope that's right - the one in St Lukes is the one I'm thinking of!! Maybe I've got confused... Which is entirely possible

Kewcumber · 06/05/2010 10:23

Ah no the one in St Luke (DS is at now) is different to the studio which is around the corner.

AlmostKewmum · 06/05/2010 10:38

Sorry yes - got the studio and kew Montessori confused! What do you think of The Studio?

AlmostKewmum · 06/05/2010 10:41

Sorry - just realised your DS is at the other one. Ignore me, will leave now - was up night with small baby and think the sleep deprivation has kicked in!!

Kewcumber · 06/05/2010 10:44

It looks lovely on the website - better outside space than St Lukes but they weren't prepared to let DS start part-time so I didn't bother going to see them.

St Lukes montesori has been fantastic for him. My first impression of it was that it was very big and chaotic (both years in the same big room) and the ouside space is skimpy. But having been there initally part-time and now full mornings, DS has a great time there and has learnt loads. They do a lot of music (the head is a musician by training) and do lovely nativity and summer concerts (DS was "gold" king )

The chaos seems much more organised now that I understand it better. I would defintiely recommend it.

Kewcumber · 06/05/2010 10:45

if you are zeriously considering it - I would happily arrange for DS to show you around!

castlesintheair · 08/05/2010 18:33

JAMM, I heard one horror story that was enough to put me off sending DD2 to the Asquith nursery which is located in the 'grounds' of Marshgate (not a part of the school). Plus a couple of my friends (Windham teachers) were quite concerned - they recommended Kings Road as the best day care nursery in the (Richmond) area. Several friends have used Grena Road and were happy with it.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 08/05/2010 19:15

Gosh what sort of horror story?

I went to see Richmond Day nursery yesterday. I liked the toddler room but was less keen on the older rooms.

I will give Kings Road a ring on Monday. I don't think they have a website so I can't nose around it first.

My DD is at Kew Montessori at St Lukes too - she has just started afternoons there everyday and is really enjoying it so far. Initially wanted her to be able to go in the mornings but they seem to have lots of activities on in the afternoons (cooking, Tatty Bumpkin Yoga, Music etc) so has all worked out nicely. Really like the head there too. They also do a couple of days a month at Broomfield House School which I think gives the little ones an idea of what "big school" may be like. Would also definitely recommend it.

The only thing I think is a little strange is when stood at the line-up to collect DD in the afternoon all the parents/nannies stand in absolute silence. No one seems to know each other or is particularly interested in finding out about the other parents. I wonder if it's the same at morning pick up...

Kewcumber - does your DS only do mornings there? Just wondered if he may know my DD!

pbills · 10/05/2010 16:26

Does anyone know anything about the other Montessori? (the studio)
Like Kewcumber said - dont seem to be able to get any first hand info anywhere!!!

NewInKew · 10/05/2010 17:14

I once again don't have any first hand info for you I'm afraid. I did meet a very smug mum the other day who couldn't wait to tell me that she had managed to get her DD into The Studio after putting her name down at birth. I did try and get DD in (as it is literally round the corner from us) but was told that there were no places available (that was almost 6 months in advance of her starting). So I suppose it must be very popular...
