'Save St Mary's Birth Centre, Melton'

There is a Facebook campaign running to keep St Mary's open. 'Save St Mary's Birth Centre, Melton'.

A fantastic place regarded by many midwives in the area as a champion site, of gold standard practice. It had been closed to post natal care for the last couple of weeks due to staff shortage and the staff there had been told that it would not re-open for post natal care again.

We have been fighting this closure for the last few days and have had publicity on the BBC news, The Leicester Mercury and a full front page of the Melton Times this week.

As with immediate effect the unit is now open for overnight stays but we are not sure for how long this will last. It is now going to public consultation.

I was planning on having my 2nd baby here in August as i started off there with my 1st but as labour did not progress by itself had to be taken to LGH, i was lucky enough to go back for post-natel care which was fantastic. I have decided that i am going to plan a home water birth if everything in pregnancy goes well this is also in the event if Melton is to close i do not want to be left with my only options of LGH or LRI.

I had my first child at St Marys 5 years ago, I had a waterbirth (not offered at LRI or LGH) and saw the same midwife throughout my ante-natal care. I could not fault the care I received, especially as I had a Xmas baby, I would be so disappointed if I had to travel to Leicester or to the new birth centre at Stamford when I have my next baby And as I has a very short labour (75 mins!) I don't think I would make it to either of them anyway.
I find it unbelievable that they are even considering closing a highly regarded and well used service in the town.

Have already joined the Facebook group. I planned to have DS there although ended up transferring to the LRI for the last 30 mins of delivery (awkward bugger). Spent the following day and night at St Mary's and it was absolute bliss. The care I received from everyone was first rate, particularly the lovely lady on nightshift who showed me how to breastfeed lying down and reassured me that she would make sure nothing untoward happened while I dozed. I can't remember her name but I will never forget her kindness

Ohhh the food.

It's like being an a top notch B&B with a VERY caring landlady.

I transferred from LGH and St MAry's said they'd "save me some lunch - ham slad or something"

Was expecting prepacked cob or similar.

Arrived to a set table - plate, knife, fork - with a massive china plate filled with mixed salad, grated cheese, boiled egg, gammon bone ham, coleslaw and a MASSIVE oven baked jacket spud.

My jaw dropped and the lady who had led me there said "Oh, we thought you've been in labour such a long time that you must be very hungry"

Tears of gratitude rolled down my face as I ravaged that plate. I was indeed starved, having had 2 rounds of toast in 42 hours.

How thoughtful! how typical of St MAry's hospital.
