Saturday night in Cambridge

Relatively new to Cambridge, haven't been out that much so need your help for somewhere to eat on a Sat night. Have been reliably informed that pubs are going to be horribly busy so won't bother with that option, but have a heartbroken vegetarian friend to distract! Looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful, with a good atmosphere, ideally on the North side of town. Or if you know of a nice out of town pub that might be a bit calmer that would be good to know too....
Thanks!

If you avoid pubs and book you should be fine for a saturday night?
For vegetarian food the rainbow cafe has a good reputation I think (though I have never been there).
how cheap and cheerful is cheap and cheerful - D'arrys is quite nice and I don't think that pricey? King St so kind of north. Sorry I don't really know the north of town that well as I usually go out in the Mill Road area. If you want cheap there is always curry somewhere on Castle hill!
out of town pubs I like - The Plough at Fen Ditton, the hole in the wall at wilbraham, The george at babraham. They are not really cheap though (Plough probably the cheapest). You could look up menus online I expect and see if they suit.

Thanks for replying! Where would you recommend
in the Mill Road?

I really like the Backstreet Bistro (definitely good atmosphere). Or the kingston arms, which is a pub, but where you can book tables.

Oh and I like Pipasha's on Newmarket road for curry.

What's your budget like?

Best atmosphere is Efes on King St but you would need to book and it's busy but in a good lively way. Lovely food (would just love to have a meal there but my meal-out days are over just now)

Plough in Fen Ditton and the Hole in the Wall are very good out of town options though I've only ever been int he day not the evening.

The Bridge at Clayhithe tends to be quite nice. It's not overpriced and has quite a few specials on each day. You can also book a table to avoid dissapointment.

I really don't think that Efes is the best place for a veggie, it's turkish and they have kebabs cooking on display, etc. It is nice though.

NorkilyChallenged · 12/03/2010 15:15

Oh yes, sorry I was forgetting about the veggie thing Sorry again.

Rainbow Cafe is nice (only been in the day) and definitely quite reasonably priced but tiny so might be worth booking.

Really recommend The Old Crown in Girton, it's had another face lift, great new menu and some lovely veggie options theoldcrowngirton.com/index.htm

totally recommend margheritas on bridge street they do the best spinach and riccota caneloni in the world!!

cazzybabs · 12/03/2010 20:17

The rainbow cafe - veggie is yummy, wagamammas is also yummy (but not a pub).. the pub opposite Kettle's yard on Castle street was nice when I went about a year ago as was the St. George near the river. What about the free press - does that still do nice food?
The backstreet bistro is yummy - also what about cafe Adriatic - that is nice too. And Al Casbah - it is turkish with kebabs cooking but I am a veggie and it doesn't bother me and the food there is yummy.
Gosh I clearly need to go out more

coolma · 14/03/2010 14:20

ooh backstreet bistro - we used to go there loads, haven't been for ages , thanks for rminding me! It is lovely..

milkmoustache · 15/03/2010 14:44

Mell - have you been to the Old Crown to test it out? Have been there once a while back and thought it crap, but since I live in Girton should give it a try!

Am filing all your responses for the future - we ended up at Anatolia which was great, even for the fussiest veggie person I know!
