Hi there, new to Netmums and stumbled across this chat. My New Year's resolution was to try to find other mums to meet with in the Southside or city centre - can't believe am actually trying to keep a resolution and is not just a work of fantasy fiction! I have a five month old boy, Alexander, and have spent the past few months trying to catch up with friends, work colleagues and family.Would love for Alexander to be around more children - none of my friends have young kids. Would also be great for me as not all friends want to do baby chat! However, am also perfectly willing and able to chat about other more adult topics; that is, if i can remember what they are!
Looking forward to hearing from other mums.

I presume you mean Mumsnet!

I'm a Southside mum but my kids a a good bit older (6, 8, 10) but there is a fairly flourishing MN meetup group in Glasgow, so watch out for the next arrangement!

prettybird · 30/01/2010 15:13

Another Southsider but again with an older child - ds is 9. I have got to know weegiemum through Mumsnet - and the other Glasgo mumsnetters are also lovely SOme of them have younger babies too.

Another idea if you want to do something quicker than the next meet-up is - and depending on where you are (and how brave you are _- that I have noticed when I have gone along to the Tramway for coffee is that there are often groups of mums there with babies. You could always go along and try and introduce yourslef. Babies are great ice breakers!

prettybird · 30/01/2010 15:14

BTW - I approve of your ds' name: it is my ds' middle name

loueden · 30/01/2010 18:09

Thanks a lot, will keep eyes open :-)

Glad you like the name!

I meet up once a month with a great group of girls that i met at my antenatal class; however, none of them live near me and was hoping for some southsider pals! One of my friends who has two older kids has prompted me to do this as she says knowing mums locally for her was a great lifeline. Go to the Tramway quite a lot either with friends or on my own - see lots of mums there but bit hesitant to start talking as all seem to know each other so well... Am not exactly a shrinking violet and usually pretty confident/sociable, but the whole new mum thing is a bit of a culture shock to me. If any Tramway regulars read this, you might see me struggling with my allegedly lightweight Silver Cross pram and a stricken look across face. Also have short blonde hair and always wear black - though not in mourning for my old single life!!

Hi

Am also southside with a dd3 and a ds1. I met loads of people when my dd was little who I am still really friendly with now through parent/ toddler groups. There is a very good one in Pollokshields at the Church of Scotland on Shields Rd/ Albert Dr. If you tell me what precise area you are in I can suggest some other good ones

I also signed up for a baby massage class at the multicultural centre (think it is now held at the tramway) and I still see the people I met there every week.

I found it hard at first cos I am not naturally the kind of person who approaches strangers but having a baby is a good icebreaker and you can always charm other mums by complimenting their babies

Would offer to meet up but think I am about to start a fulltime job - gulp - and don't think I'll have any free time. Good luck.

loueden · 30/01/2010 19:08

Thanks very much for your reply. Live in Queenspark area. Alexander will be going to nursery in August- Little Einsteins on Nithsdale Road, Pollokshields. Dreading going back to work. Good luck with your job! :-)

Hi Loueden, I am a southside mum but back at work now so not so much time for meet-ups . When DD was little I met lots of other mums at baby massage and then at buggyfit. The buggyfit class is in Queens Park a couple of mornings a week and is good fun, most of the mums go for coffee/lunch and a chat in the glasshouse afterwards.

loueden · 31/01/2010 19:36

thanks wiggletastic - thinking of trying buggyfit as sounds like a laugh!

hiya, another south-sider...there are a few things on in the tramway - there's yoga with baby on a thursday morning, which is great. you can get info at: www.littlegreeneyoga.com. you need to book that though. There's also dance your socks off on a thursday morning, which you just turn up for. they've also just started a healthy eating class on a friday morning, which is free and is held in the boilerhouse. again, you just need to turn up. I think this week it's on weaning, so might be good for you if you have a 5 month old!

I also did buggyfit, and it's a great way to meet folk.

bethjeff · 31/01/2010 23:43

im a city centre-er but im in the southside a fair bit.

2 month baby girl and for some reason have an almost entirely black wardrobe too!

will be in shawlands later this week if you fancy.

loueden · 01/02/2010 21:51

Hi Bethjeff and thanks for your reply. Am free on Wednesday or Friday if either of these days suit?
Can be flexible on time, but would prefer half 2 onwards as Alexander just started on solids and as you can imagine lunch is a rather drawn out affair!
Let me know what you think :-)

OP posts:
bethjeff · 01/02/2010 21:59

Friday would probably suit me best- am popping into my work with the baby on wed...should be interesting!

Where do you fancy meeting up? just at Queens park entrance or at the tramway or something like that?

I haven't a clue about the solids thing etc as its a few weeks away for Ava but it will be nice to get some pointers!!

loueden · 01/02/2010 22:17

Queenspark gates/entrance, the one that faces out onto Victoria Road, would be good for me as i live just around the corner. Does half 2 suit? We could then go on to Tramway or similar.

Can certainly give you pointers on solids - must have read every flaming book ever published!

My mobile no.is 07725310944 just in case you need to contact me.

I'll look out for fellow black clothes wearer! Have short blonde hair and will probably have a Maclaren buggy as my Silver Cross is giving me gyp at the moment.

By the way, am 41 but young in outlook and used to be told i looked younger - not sure now after sleepless nights etc!!

Catch up with you and Ava soon.

bethjeff · 02/02/2010 03:00

Half two is absolutely fine- I'll be coming up from visiting folk on Kilmarnock rd so it'll take no time at all to scoot round!

I'll drop you a wee text at some point today just to confirm times etc.

I think the sleepless nights must have aged me by about 30 years... I've taken up knitting and everything!

Looking forward to Friday! Speak to you soon!

Btw- if any other mumsnetters are reading this you're more than welcome to join us!

prettybird · 02/02/2010 13:00

I'll be on our way to the Alps by then probably

NumptyMum · 02/02/2010 13:22

I'm on the other side of the river but what's worked for me is going along to local playgroups (as suggested already). I think also you just meet folk as you go to places where children congregate... it happens more and more as babies start to get mobile and run into each other . I met folk at the library, and you might also find that the glasshouses in Queens Park are quite good (play area suitable for slightly older children so is v popular). The other thing you can do is sign up for classes such as Jo Jingles and baby massage (I kept in touch with quite a few mums from our baby massage class).

Hope your meet up goes well later this week .

bethjeff · 02/02/2010 18:44

prettybird- rub it in why dont you!?

lol no im sure you'll have a fabulous time although i am a bit jealous!

numptymum thanks for the advice. There's must be hundreds of babies in the city centre but the only classes/groups etc are either at townhead, gorbals or in the southside.

we really are in need of a decent city centre baby friendly venue. I can't wait to move house!

NumptyMum · 02/02/2010 19:15

If you're city centre, you're in a good place to get to Garscube Playrooms when your DD is a bit older (you can go with a baby but it really comes into it's own once they are mobile). Open Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm; very handy for wet days .

As for classes, there are a few in the West End I'm sure. Was going to tell you about this great baby yoga class I went to but have just spotted she's moved away - grrr! Glasgow Baby might give some ideas. Mum and baby cinema is great when the babies are still small!!

There's also Ducklings swimming classes at Gorbals pool, think these are Sun or Mon? I go to the ones in Scotstoun on a Fri, it's nursery rhymes and splashing about to get baby used to being in the water. I think gorbals pool is a bit chilly though, so make sure you get something warm for baby to wear (I got a Babywarma wetsuit from eBay).

loueden · 02/02/2010 19:48

Thanks to all the mums who posted advice - much appreciated.

Looking forward to meet up on Friday -and yes, any other mumsnetters welcome!

Hi Loueden,

I'm in Queens Park, 3 girls aged 9, 19 months and 7 months, and would love to meet for coffee or walk if you were still wanting company. Alexandra (oldest d) is at Shawlands Primary so we walk across the park to shawlands all the time. Joanna x

weegiemum · 26/02/2010 10:38

I just realised I missed this - I'm also Southside though all my kids are at school (at the Gaelic School).

If you're meeting up in the SOuthside again let me know - especially in school hols/after school. Loueden - my dd1 has just turned 10 and is in P5 so hopefully would get on well with your dd, and my dd2 (6) just wants a baby (NOT getting one!!) so spending time with wee ones is something she loves!

turquoisebay · 26/02/2010 13:29

Hi weegiemum,

We have friends whose daughters at are the gaelic school. Our daughter (P4) envys them the bus pickup to school every morning. She seems to think that Gaelic school would be more fun than her primary...!

Do you have a southside meet up arranged sometime soon?

weegiemum · 26/02/2010 21:38

Nothing arranged -- starting new thread!!!

luluvalentine · 28/02/2010 01:54

Hi - just found this thread am keen to meet up anywhere anyone in the southside? Am tramway and glasshouse regular but usually on my lonesome - apart from the baby of course
