Help - Moving back to York in new year after split with H..

I've been through a rotten time after sadly ending a 10 year marriage with H, and have decided to move back towards my family with 2 small ds' in tow. They're 2 and 4. It's scary and exciting at the same time. I'm currently a long way down south so it's a heck of a move and I haven't lived in the area for 15 years, but I need to be nearer family for support atm.

I'm looking at areas around Bishopthorpe, or possibly larger villages like Dunnington or Wilberfoss. My parents are north of York, my dsis is east so I don't want to be too far away.

Would love to hear from (and possibly meet up with in future) any MNers in York area. I'm especially looking for any recommendations on good primary schools. ds1 has language delay and is currently flourishing in a small primary school here. I'd like another friendly school where he will receive lots of care and attention.

Thankyou!!

Ooooooh hello

I am in Wilberfoss.

My children are not as young as yours - 12.5 and 10 - both boys, but I would be happy to meet up with you for a coffee when you move back.

The village primary is lovely. DS2 has had to have a little extra help and had an IEP and the school were very supportive.

Hi Bellavita, I saw you on another thread and hoped you'd see this one!!

Wilberfoss is quite familiar to me already, it's not so far from where I grew up (the village beginning with E where Richard Hammond had his crash..!) I didn't know much about the school, but the Ofsted looks very good, and I know that the village has a reputation for being friendly, exactly what I need.

Am up in the area this week, so will do a bit more research and book some schools appts. And yes I'd love to have a coffee when I finally get up there, thankyou so much!

hi Kettlechip
I live in Southbank which is close to Bishopthorpe and has 2 really nice primary schools (scarcroft and knavesmire) my eldest 2 are at/have been through knavesmire and we have a little one (nearly 2yo) who we are hoping to get into knavesmire (oversubscribed!)

I love the area, we have the racecourse nearby and lovely rowntrees park.

so sorry to hear about your split with dh.

as Bella said, would be happy to meet for coffee too.

Hi Kettlechip.
We're in the next village along the A1079 from Bellavita, begins with B- M-. We also have a village school which is very small and friendly, though the latest Ofsted was disappointing.

kettlechip · 21/12/2009 21:22

Hi Kathy, I know exactly where you mean! I don't think you can always judge from Ofsted's, my priority is somewhere smallish, friendly, and where they will really look after ds1.

Somewhere with a good preschool, or nursery would also be a bonus, as I need to think of ds2 too!

I wouldn't recommend Knavesmire if your child has any sort of particular educational needs. They have been utterly rubbish with my friend's child

My children use Park Grove - and I think it's a fab school. Very, very friendly.

ooh hello dwayne my niece went to that very Montessori, and my nephew does now.. tis a small world and I bet my dsis is known by people on here!

I am very tempted with it for ds2, finances permitting post settlement.

Northern, thanks for the tip off on Knavesmire and Park Grove. This is giving me lots to think about.

Now this is where it gets a little spooky dwayne - I think I was actually supposed to be seeing you this evening with dsis but it's a little weather dependent now..!

Apparently you're up for doing a book club with me though so looking forward to that! Will have to try and recruit some more local MNers..

Little update - looked round lots of schools this week and liked all of them, (York is blessed with great schools), but Wilberfoss seemed to really fit the bill, as did Bishopthorpe -

bellavita, I may take you up on the offer of coffee once I can get sorted and moved!

Yay!

kettlechip · 22/01/2010 20:16

Yay indeed! Fingers crossed lots of nice houses start to come up for sale (or for rent initially!!)
