Hello TH Mums,

DH may be offered a job at Canary Wharf and his future boss has suggested TH /Greenwich as potential for a home and family stuff and schools - can anyone point me in the direction of

  1. Good Independednt schools for a 5 and 3 yr old - will be in year 2 and reception next year

  2. Where on earth i should look to find a family house in a family area for about 500K (is it even possible)

  3. The good, the bad and the ugly of the area

am nervous but up for a change as jobs have to come first and I said with the power of MN i would start researching

thanks

( off to bath kids back after baths)

There is only one independent school in TH, afaik, which is Gatehouse. Some TH kids also go to Islington and City independent schools, which include Lyceum, City of London Boys, um, I forget the others.

There are lots of three-bed houses in the area, I think 500K is maybe a bit low though.

Tower Hamlets has E14, E1, E3 and E2. E14 is where Canary Wharf is. E1 is close to the City. E3 is north of E14. E2 is between E3 and E1. Gatehouse is in E3.

Houses are bigger in E3, and I guess it's more of a 'family' area - there's Victoria Park, which is lovely. Lots of houses in E3 for sale.

My DS goes to this school, he loves it there. We live on the IoD (E14), south of Canary Wharf and he gets a school bus to school. There is a Montessori school near South Quay. DS went to pre-school there and liked it, but we had to take him out when he started reception because he was very unhappy. However it would probably be good for a different type of child (quiet, studious, academic).

I visited Gatehouse and really liked it too. It's often over subscribed though so you'd have to check whether they have spaces for both of your children. Gatehouse has a good school bus service, several of my neighbours send their children there. They say it's a lovely friendly school although not particularly academic.

We've lived here for 9 years and I have been really pleasantly surprised by how comfortable it is for a family. That said, we will be leaving the area to moved to Ireland in a couple of years to be closer to my family. If we weren't moving to Ireland I'm not sure how long we would stay as we live in a flat and I quite fancy a large garden. The houses around here tend to be either small 2-storey 3-bed terraced cottages, usually with a nice garden or roomier modern townhouses over 3 or 4 storeys with a teeny garden.

Hi. Actually there is another school option - our daughter will be going there this August. www.newmodelschool.co.uk/faraday

I think you might find a house on the Isle of Dogs or Greenwich for 500K if you look around. Try the Clippers Quay development on the Isle of Dogs. We love the area around Canary Wharf. Been here for 12 years.

Hi, have a look at Salmon Lane/York Square (E14/E1), 4 bed houses with shared gardens (freehold), lots of yummy mums and close to C Wharf. Pierhead prep school (NEW) or Riverhouse seem to be popular if you have cash. Dock St Nursery good.

Hope it helps
C

If you look round bethnal green/ stepney green/ bow you will find 3 bed houses for £500k, esp if you don't mind them being modern.
