Hello Greenwich Mums,

DH may be offered a job at Canary Wharf and his future boss has suggested Greenwich as potential for a home and family stuff and schools - can anyone point me in the direction of

  1. Good Independednt schools for a 5 and 3 yr old - will be in year 2 and reception next year

  2. Where on earth i should look to find a family house in a family area for about 500K (is it even possible)

  3. The good, the bad and the ugly of the area

am nervous but up for a change as jobs have to come first and I said with the power of MN i would start researching

thanks

( off to bath kids back after baths)

Hi there - lots of good day schools round Blackheath - Pointers, Blackheath High School....
Your budget is pretty reasonable for the area the schools are in as well
Good luck!

Greenwich is a fantastic place to live for children of any age - the park is great of course, but also easy to get out to the coast or the countryside or central london in 10 mins from greenwich or blackheath. your house budget is pretty good and should get you a house in the area with three beds. traffic a bit of a nightmare in greenwich and blackheath but links to canary wharf fairly good and several options. re; independant schools; blackheath prep excellent (selective)and sibling policy has just changed, blackheath high, colfes, heath house and pointers (still have selection process but think are less 'hot housing') are main schools centred around blackheath/lee area. good state primaries are All Saints (need faith recommendation) and john ball (both lewisham council schools). secondaries crap but again colfes/blackheath high are options.
bit of a 'yummy mummy' area! not sure if thats good or bad!

Greenwich is lovely, you couldn't come to a nicer place. There is loads to do and everything is very close by:

  • Greenwich Park, which is massive with a big playground, boating lake, pond, hills, deer, several good cafes, tennis courts ...
  • The Maritime Museum, which is brilliant for kids (and adults) and free. My DD (aged 4) and I can spend hours here wandering between exhibits, cafe, kids activities, etc
  • Greenwich Picturehouse, a great small cinema which shows interesting films for adults and kids (and if you prefer horrible multiplexes, there is one up the road on the Peninsula)
  • There is a nice Waterstones with a kids section and cafe near the Cutty Sark
  • Greenwich Theatre always has something interesting on and often does kids stuff (e.g. they had the Gruffalo on recently)
  • The Planetarium also always has interesting family shows on

... and for adults, you have a comedy venue (Up the Creek), dozens of great pubs (my favourites are the Trafalgar, the Cutty Sark, Richard I, Union Bar), restaurants, nice art gallery (Queen's House), excellent and unusual shopping in the town centre.

Local estate agents are Humphrey Skitt, John Payne, Meridian and King Sturge. For that budget you should get somewhere nice in the conservation area.

Hi there! If you live in the Greenwich area feel free to join my 'greenwich mums' facebook page! I hold regular coffee mornings/afternoons, photo sessions, nights out and pamper afternoons! Would love to meet any mums and introduce them to other mums in the area.

Charlotte
