Hi All

DD wanted to started the dreaded ballet so I'm interested to know if anyone recommends a ballet/dance class in the Colchester area. I'd prefer an afterschool class but weekends would be just about acceptable!

Thanks

I dont know anything about it myself, but would be interested to hear how you get on - and particularly if there are any boys there. My DS loves dancing and pink - so i was wondering if he may enjoy ballet (plus its another way to piss the inlaws off!!)

My daughter goes to Lorraine George Dance school in Myland. It is a lovely school where they have a lot of fun but also have high standards. My daughter does a Primary class which is after school and is a mixture of ballet, tap and modern. I think when they go up to Grade One they can do just ballet. The mix of all three works really well when they are younger though because they can try all the dance styles out.

Hope that helps.

Pooter - there were a couple of boys in the class that DD was in when she was your DS's age. I think it is pretty normal. I was thinking of sending my DS actually!

I've heard good things about the Lorraine George School too but DD isn't interested.

Just wanted to say that I know a little boy who's now 7 (not local) who LOVES ballet and is doing fantastically at it - I think it's becoming more usual since Billy Elliot!

Thank you - I had heard mixed reviews about the lorraine george dance school. One mum said that she was shouting at parents recently for children needing to go to the toilet during classes so don't know if I'd want to have to deal with that attitude.

Lucyfer - do you leave your daughter there or stay when the class is on?

I leave her there and then pick her up when she is finished. I thought she would be a bit nervous about it the first few times but she was fine - she loves it.

I obviously can't comment on shouting about the toilet... I think it unlikely that she would shout - maybe they were just firmly told that they should go to the toilet before the class starts? I know that they are encouraged to do that and I don't think it is a bad idea really. It is a bit disruptive for the class if the girls (or boys!) keep running in and out saying they need the loo. I know that are discouraged from chatting too much as well - but again I do think this is a good thing because they are there to learn how to dance not to muck around. I've always found Lorraine to be very friendly - but I'm not saying that I don't believe your friends, I guess they just had a different experience or have different expectations.

Now I sound really over defensive! up to you really - i'm sure there are lots of other good schools too but I only know about that one!

No problem - I might give her a call anyway to find out a bit more - thanks for the info
