Gah. We were buying our dream home. Meant to be moving in Jan. They have pulled out. The swines.

So now we are back looking again.

Generally we have looked at the villages but I am starting to wonder about the centre of town - can I do city centre living?

Persuade me either way!!

Think we will start looking at some houses in the centre just to see what we are 'missing'.

where do you live ruby? we used to live in fulbourn, it was fantastic, but we could find houses we liked that we couldn't afford and housed we could afford that we didn't like.. hence the move out to the sticks.

Ruby
"we are in a village with good schools ^and* an excellent bus service!!"
Good schools? Not entirely convinced (have tried them all but admit that one has definitely improved since DS2 was there)
Bus Service - try collecting your DC off the last bus when it has been redirected to Parkside due to the behaviour of some passengers (yes I know they all come H........)
But the D & D is very good under its new owners!

The village college is lovely. I went there and it was good then - would love to send my two there.

Lilymaid · 09/12/2009 12:21

I preferred LVC under CB to new regime but wasn't entirely happy with it - but that was largely through the shortage of Maths/Science teachers at the time DS2 was there.
But going back to houses, I would certainly recommend the area and the schools both local state and Cambridge independents. In fact. when we move, I'm banking on the added value to house prices of good schools outweighing any fall in value if the wind farm goes ahead.

thegrowlygus · 09/12/2009 21:22

well - looked near linton today, and fulbourn. And caxton. And tomorrow - histon.

Not that we are all over the place or anything.

anything in quy/lode/bottisham/swaffhams you like?

ChasingSquirrels · 09/12/2009 21:55

maybe I should advertise mine on here!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 09/12/2009 22:24

you moving CS?

ChasingSquirrels · 09/12/2009 22:38

I guess it depends what I was offered!
(but no, not really - like the village, easy into work, like house etc. actually just about to have small extension so unlikely to move for years now)

thegrowlygus · 10/12/2009 17:25

gah. getting stressed out now.

OP posts:
gizmo · 10/12/2009 17:32

Oi GG, what's occurin'? Extra stress or just fed up with the existing situation?

So, maybe we can help? Let's start from the beginning shall we? What does your dream home look like? How quickly do you have to/want to move? Did you come to a conclusion about whether you could live in the town centre or not?

thegrowlygus · 10/12/2009 17:45

OK.

The woman buying from us is now getting twitchy. We had insisted she be out by end of Jan as the people we were buying from wanted that. Now that they have dropped out, she has ditched her lease from end of Jan so is terrified that we won't be out by then. And our estate agents are saying that she won't hang on for long.

Hence stress!

Second, I have seen 2 houses I like - both same price. One Histon, one abington. Histon one new build so would be more straight forward, but bugger all garden. Abington one lovely but small bedrooms and lovely garden but we are basically asking them to get out asap which I feel crap about and worry that they could easily turn round (as our last purchase did) and say 'actually no' the week before kind of thing.

So. Now awaiting estate agent to get back to us whether they will accept the offer.

The only good thing about any of this, is that after posting on my facebook status that I was stressed, my gorgeous (yet gay) friend has been leaving me cheery messages. I was in love with him when I was 15. Still makes me all weak at the knees when he leaves me a message!!!

And now - if it turns out you are the lady in abington - then please be nice and accept our offer!!!

Houses are so so stressful. I have done the wedding thing - that was ok, I have done the bereavement thing too many times and had to cope with that...

thegrowlygus · 10/12/2009 17:53

OMG. Have just bought a house.

Fingers crossed this time...

If this one goes pearshaped I think we will give in for a bit!

OP posts:
gizmo · 10/12/2009 17:56

Sadly I'm not the lady in Abington, nor do I know her or I would put in a good word.

Because I do feel for you: housing stress is always bad because it often feels like you ought to be able to do something, but keep running up against a brick wall of indifference. How people don't commit murders I'll never know.

In your shoes, I'd take the Abington place, though: you can always try and extend bedrooms, not much you can do with a small garden.

gizmo · 10/12/2009 17:57

Cross post! The Abington one? How exciting?

thegrowlygus · 10/12/2009 18:02

Yay!

Everything crossed for this one.

Could really do with a large glass of wine to celebrate!

Like abington v much. Had friends there when I was at school, we lived in Linton, but abington always seemed more 'exclusive'.

thegrowlygus · 10/12/2009 20:39

Oh yeah - that describes me - "exclusive"

goldenpeach · 10/12/2009 21:18

It's not a good time to buy if you are in a hurry. Not much on the market (but then it was hardly better in summer/late summer when there was huge competition - yes, we lost two houses to crazy bidders).

I have an interest in the one that is being run as b&b, but no garden and the price is high.

Two have come back on the market again, a detached one off cherry hinton road and a terraced town house not far from Mills Road, around the 340-400 range.

I am not far from Windsor Road and those two houses are so overpriced. The Road is used as a cut through so quite busy. Nearby roads are cheaper (or should i say realistic?).

I quite like the CB4 area, though

FrankCross · 10/12/2009 21:27

Congrats thegrowlygus!

Hope it all goes smoothly for you.

Lilymaid · 10/12/2009 23:10

Abington School is lovely and the two villages have a good atmosphere (plus some allotments are now becoming available there if you are into that sort of thing).
