Hi
we are relocating with DS to Brighton in Dec and will both be working at the Royal Alex.Would really appreciate advice re:

  1. living somewhere we might be able to get a bit of garden/space and parking, but easy to get to the hospital (I was thinking east the hospital)so as to avoid the commuting traffic jams. 2)nurseries close to the hospital 3)any nanny recommendations or nanny-shares

thanks so much

Try the Council's Childcare Information Service (Brighton and Hove City Council number is 290000) for nannies and nurseries. I think the hospitals have nurseries attached - Brighton General certainly has.

Parking around the hospital almost impossible so buses to work more practical if possible. More parking as you get into Whitehawk Estate and houses cheaper. However, not popular and comes with a bad reputation and difficult catchment area for primary schools in that there seems to be little choice. Can easily walk to hospital from Hanover/Queens Park - very mc and popular areas with good choice of schools.

gumtree also good in Brighton for nannies

There's definitely a nursery at the RSCH (right on the same site as the Royal Alex)as a friends daughters go there - presumably soemone in HR could help with the details

Hanover/Queens Park is lovely and also has lots of good primary schools. I too wouldn't be over convinced by east of the hospital - there are some really lovely parts, but...

I know of a very nice childminder in the Hanover/Queens Park area but don't know of her availability/how that fits in with your shifts etc.

I recently lived in the Queen's park area and agree it is LOVELY and it took me less than 10 mins to walk to the hospital (very handy when in labour I can tell you ).

We didn't have much of a garden but Queen's Park was on our doorstep and is absolutely gorgeous and IMO very safe.

Parking not so great but certainly not impossible. (My street was free parking but was very tight and often no spaces).

I work down the road from the RSCH and will be sending DS to sunshine day nursery when I return from Maternity leave in March. I have visited the nursery, it looks great and is right next to the hospital.

I currently live in Woodingdean with my very own parking space and garden and take a 15 min bus ride to work / nursery. There is a great primary school, nice swimming pool and a friendly village atmoshphere. I'm still very close to kemp town and the marina (although not on foot) and I believe that property wise you get quite a bit more for your money by living just outside of town.

Hope this helps and that you enjoy sunny Brighton!

Thanks SO much for the info- DS has got a place now at Sussex House at the hospital- am truing to ignore M-I-L making comments about a nanny being better for his development. Will be coming down in the next week or so to start looking- anyparticular estate agents you would recommend for Queens PArk area ?

TA v. much !

Before you decide where you choose to live in Brighton, please take the time to look into primary schools, as Brighton and Hove has a critical shortage with all central schools being oversubscribed and currently distance to school gates is shrinking, so do not let the estate agent tell you it ok, make your own investigations.

Also you must make yourself aware of private provision as this is also now facing waiting lists! so do not find yourself in the wrong part of town when you need a school.

On the question of where to live and garden space, do not overlook west Brighton, bigger houses, bigger gardens and in some parts no parking permits and a bun fight for parking!

Unlike London no commute through Brighton is that terrible, so think more broadly and you will be richly rewarded.

any further questions can be sent to [email protected]

Best of luck!
